COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In honor of Jimmy Hutmaker, Excelsior’s legendary ambassador, we made a traditional Baltic porter, conditioned on cherry wood. Brewed with licorice root, this beer features a pleasant sweetness, blending perfectly with the wood flavor, making this the perfect fall beer.

On tap at Burger Jones restaurant. Pours a dark brown with minimal head. Aroma of malt and roasted grain. Quite sweet flavor that contains some coffee, some malt, and a hint of smokiness underneath. Not bad at all for a porter.

On tap at the brewery, December 2012. Black with low carbonation, which is fine for the style. Served far too cold. Malt and lots of dried fruit, including prunes and raisin. Lightly smoked wood and some red wine, with yeast as well. Good.

Poured fresh and tasty from a Thanksgiving growler. Sweet , malty taste with a nice thin head and dark color. Good way to start the winter ale season. Was not blown away by the aroma, but this is a respectable beverage for those who like a milder, dark beer.

On draught at the Excelsior brewery’s taproom in Excelsior, MN. Pours a clear dark brown colored brew with an average sized beige head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma is very faint at first until allow the beer warm up. Scents of light brown sugar, a touch of doppelbock-like yeast, some candi sugar and caramel malt. Taste is full bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of roasted caramel malt, some black licorice, brown sugar and some hard wood. Finish is quite smooth, semi-sweet, some alcohol warmth with aftertaste of brown sugar, caramel malt, and a touch of cherry wood.

Tap at brewery. Pours dark with some white head. Aroma is that of a typical porter with a nice thick mouth feel. Not a ton of roasted malts but a nice beer.

Growler from brewery. Pours brown mahogany with a tight khaki head that fades to a tight foamy ring around glass. Aroma is a little sweet, but I get hints of fruit and wood and toasted malt. Taste is sweet woody and hints of scotch ale and fruit with the malt rounding everything off in the finish, but the roasted malt seems too subtle. Palate is medium to full with it also slick and finishing dry. Decent.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Tap at the brewery. Very dark - nearly black - pour with a just off white foamy head. More sweet than roasty, but a good bit of both. Full bodied. Very enjoyable.
