Amber color; thin creamy head. Simple aroma. Some caramel flavor, correct body, residual sweetness, but very easy indeed.

First tasted this in the Saltcot, Saltcoats (JDW) in December 2000. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear orange amber in colour with a thick white creamy head. Decent chewy toffee note in the long aroma. Creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts gives a rich maltloaf base with syrupy raisins, orange peel and festive spices evident. Good smack of spicy hops impart a boiled resiny bitter aftertaste which compliments the malt well. Finish is warming with vinous notes of sherry and oak cask, along with mincemeat pie filling. My second favourite from the Exmoor portfolio. Well recommended and worth trying, you can easily tell this is 5%.

Cask - The Glass House (JDW), Norwich. Small though lasting creamy beige head leaving a thick lace atop a dark amber body. Malty bread & red fruit aromas. Mid fruit sweetness on the tongue with a lightly sour edge. Light to medium body, fairly soft palate texture with a short finish. Not a lot of hop at all & a mild metallic note in the finish.

The Baron. Slightly misted ruby, level foam top. Cranberry, light dough and oak nose; taste of wet dough, apple peel and redcurrant; cinnamon and oak creaminess. Maybe a pinch of coriander, or lemony hop at least. Still, a pretty bog standard GK-style red bitter.

Cask at the Central Bar, JDW. Pours a clear, rich copper-gold with a creamy, off-white head. Bready malts in the nose with some hard caramel. Fairly sweet, very doughy flavor. Some lightly tart citric bitterness. Light to medium in body with average, smooth carbonation. Mediocre finish, some messy malts, light bread and faintly astringent hops. Um, it’s ok. Pretty basic.

Cask, The Ox-fford in Macclesfield. Went straight for it as I always love an Xmas ale, alas just a reasonable bitter. So felt a little let down though it certainly passed as drinkable. Just a little average and uncomplicated, hops, malts, little caramel. Bah.

[Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.] Copper coloured with a thin cream head; sweet fruit aroma; fruity flavour with lots of sourish plums and chewy caramel malts; dry, biscuity, finish. Very pleasant.
