Dark golden to brown ale with a thin dissolving white head, a bit lifeless when poured. Light oxidized malt with nutty notes in aroma. In mouth, light sweet malt with light nuttyness and roastiness in final, with bitter chocolate, not very hopped, thinner than expected.

Deep amber/brown colour, thin tan head. Fruit and toasted malt. Cherry and semi-sweet caramel. Some plumminess as well.

I could drink this and look at its dark colour, and it is somewhat rich in chocolate malts and caramel. Bit of roast.. But sourdough mid sip?Medium mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2008 2008-07-13. Rich brown body with a quick tan head. Sweet rich malt aroma, notes of dusty malt and hints of cocoa. Touchs of cocoa return in the flavour, mild roast kissed brown ale like notes. (7+) Average plus palate for cask, lightly carbonated. Rather nice. Glad to have revisited this Ontario mainstay. 7/3/7+/3/15 - 3.5 Cask at Victory Cafe Cask Fest

November 2004. Ruby brown body, with a small white film of a head. Bit of muted roastyness and malt in the aroma. Flavour has a nice maltyness and the oddest hint of something that reminds me pleasantly of licorice or anise in the background? Touch watery in the finish. Average palate. Enjoyable. 5/3/7/3/12 - 3.0 Draft @ Bow & Arrow, Toronto</I

Draught (cask). At Volo. * This was described as "Dry-hopped F&M Dark." Poured dark reddish-brown, the colour of strong iced tea, with a large lasting foamy-creamy beige lasting head. Aroma strongly of dry tea-like hops which pretty much overpowered the light roast malt, some nutty mossiness in the background. Flavour was pretty much similar, just somewhat lighter - smooth, creamy mouthfeel, slightly sour - rather like a hopped-up dunkel - very enjoyable, even as the end of the cask.

Cask at Bar Volo. Listed as "F&M Dark (Dry Hopped)". Pours a clear dark amber with an average size creamy off-white head. I was surprised to see such a head for a cask beer. Mild aroma is nice and hoppy with some sweet malt in the background and, as HogTownHarry put it, some "nutty mossiness". Flavour follows the aroma and is quite bitter and enjoyable. Thin bodied and creamy mouthfeel. I was surprised how much I liked this, maybe F&M should always ’dry-hop’ this beer. Good stuff.

[620-20070916] Sample @ Feast of Fields (Hillsburgh, ON). Dark fruity plum aroma with hint of sweet grain and a malt background. Clear, amber brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Dark bread yeast grains flavour. Medium-full body is a little raspy. Quite nice.

Chocolate and nutty malts in the sweet and simple aroma. Clear dark copper coloured body is topped by a thin off white head that recedes rapidly to ring. Chocolate malt flavour, some caramel some nuttiness. Mild herbal hops are apparent. Light-medium finishing bitterness. Perhaps a touch of roast in the aftertaste. Thin and watery body detracts greatly from overall enjoyment especially when paired with strong but short-lived carbonation. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle.
