3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at Victory Cafe, and bottles from the brewery. Deep almost-black colour with a finger or two of creamy, dark tan head. Both aroma and flavour hold a lot of coffee, which meshes well with the dark roasted malt. There are also hints of cocoa and licorice, and a pleasant soft roundness on the palate. One minor complaint is that the body might be considered a touch thin for the style, but it’s so good otherwise, I’m willing to overlook that.

On cask at Volo. Pours a jet black with a thick browned dark tan head. Big coffee, dark bitter cocoa, a hint of vanilla, char. Medium bodied, plum and prune, more cocoa, a little more coffee. Finishes smooth and with some lingering bitterness.

[1976-20090131] Cask. Coffee oil roast aroma has a hint of chocolate. Black body with a small long-lasting creamy tan head. Dark dry-roasted wood and charcoal malt flavour. Full body is dry. Quite dry and lovely, this combination of flavours really appeals to me.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 28, 2011 Update: On tap at the brewery 14/11/11 - ricch black body, massive tan cap, even sweet-bitter-roasty character with a lightly dry finish. Top flight london styled oatmeal stout.
Dregs of the keg at the Kiwi:
Black and light shedding, puffy tan cap, good lace.
Cocoa and coffee dominate the nose, wafts of dark fruit and grass.
Thin bodied but coffee predominates flavor but there are some herbal fresh hop cone bittering balance. Finished clean dry and bitter with a tad of astringency.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask at the Victory Café Winter Festival. Pours black with a spare diminishing creamy tan head. Slightly mild, dry aroma of coffee, dark malt, light hops and some mild lactic notes. Flavour of espresso and malt first followed by light green hops -- perhaps a tad watery but not bad at all. Average to medium bodied. Well done Stonehammer, this is pretty good stuff.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask. At Victory Cafe Cask Ale Festival, January 2009. Opaque black with a solid reasonably lasting tan head. Aroma of sweetened semistrong coffee, cola syrup and light herbal bitterness. The taste delivered more bitterness than I expected, plenty of coffee character, somewhat grainy and creamy - no cola in the taste. Average body, a bit of astringency, slick and cask-smooth, some burnt treacle emerged in the medium-length finish, leaving a slightly burnt aftertaste which wasn’t unpleasant. Apart from the hint of cola syrup in the aroma, pretty solid indeed.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled pints at the King Edward, in Ilderton ON- Deep opaque dark brown/black, poured a finger of frothy cappucinno head. Coffee is upfront in the nose, some burnt toast, dark chocolate, aniseed. Tasted of bitter coffee, dark chocolate, charred wood, some hops, black licorice. Bitter and creamy, perhaps a bit thin mid mouth, but that is only a minor complaint in what is otherwise a good offering from F & M. Thanks for getting in this on Rich!

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
2008-01-31. Black body with a modest foamy brown head and lace. Dry roast and coffee in the aroma, malt, mild dry dark malt. Flavour is likewise roasty with a good dose of coffee, roast and bitterness - water dilute coffee, like cold soaked beans as a opposed to brewed coffee? Or left over grounds? At least that was the impression I got, but then I am not a coffee drinker either. Very mild cocoa touches. (6+) Average palate is very lightly carbonated. Meh, decent brew but the coffee character is very much not to my tastes. Cask at Victory Cafe Winter Festival
