The trend seems to be to brew for the season at hand, and winter is no exception. Unfortunately for we consumers, some of the larger brewers are so eager to create a new flavor, they sacrifice the quality. I’m so tired of over-spiced winter lagers that leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. Finally, someone got it right. This is a lightly spiced IPA with a reddish tint, moderately carbonated, without the bite and a slightly cloudy pour that won’t overwhelm you in its complexity. The array of flavors in its blend give you the winter experience without detracting from the hoppy IPA backdrop. It doesn’t slam you in the face at the start like a Sam Adams or Widmer’s, and finishes easily without any burnt notes like you might get from other winter lagers. If you can get this, you have to try it.

13 ounce sample on tap at Winchester Goose in Chico. The aroma is pretty hoppy with light lemon citrus and a little tangerine. Pine is also present. Moderate underlying sweetness, too. Quaffable. Scant haziness in this golden-orange body. Medium white head present and good lacing. Starts with some citrus hop bitterness before this becomes full of oniony hop flavors in the middle. Finishes a little sweet with moderate bitterness. Technically good, but the onion just rubs me the wrong way. I am surprised to get onion from Simcoe and Citra.

Taster@Faction. This was my first Faction beer. As soon as the aroma touched my nose I thought I was in Alpine. Cool. Pours clear amber with a medium creamy off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is a bit light but it is that Alpine-esque perfect marriage of pine needles, grapefruit, and passionfruit that I love. Flavor is light sweet, light plus bitter, again very Pure-Hoppiness like but a bit harsher on the finish. Medium body, very creamy mouthfeel. Nice beer.
