The Painted Black IPA is one of the first examples of this new style to emerge from the South. It combines the dark-as-night color of a stout with a prominent "Northwest" hop aroma — citrusy, piney, and resinous. The body has some sweet malt flavors, with just a hint of roastiness and toasted malt.

Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with thick, frothy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, spicy and earthy hops, raisins, and light fig. Flavor is rich roast and chocolate flavors, coffee, burnt toast, earthy hop bitterness, and faint dark fruit esters; dry, roast finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Draft at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a bubbly beige head and lots of lacing. Tastes like burnt toast, rich coffee, toasted malt, very good. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet, malty cocoa, light coffee and roasted grains.

A very nice sweet balanced black malty beer. Fading head dark black. Very impressive. One of the best beers of Alabama. Nice creamy with bitter punch ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap, thin black pour with a light tan head. Aroma is full of malt and pine, cocoa, very nice! Taste is great, well balanced hoppiness with a nice malt backbone. This one drinks light a light refreshing beer...even though its a very dark colored beer. Great example of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Growler from Liquor Express in Huntsville. The plastic bottle had a little too much adventure, so my sample may be a little off. Pours black, with just a few bubbles, and no head. Resin and citrusy hops, light coffee and chocolate malts. Light malty sweetness up front, with significant bitterness through the finish, and long into the aftertaste. Medium body, oily, and very astringent. Overall, this is a mediocre black IPA. No carbonation, and a relatively unpleasant flavor. Hopefully I can resample this sometime, uncontaminated.

7/27/13. On tap at the brewery. Rich deep dark brown pour, nearly black, with a nice tan head. The best looking beer we’ve had so far. Dank hop aroma, a touch of hot dog water, a bit of roasted malts. More of a roasted malt character in the flavor, bitter, and a touch chalky, with some lingering citrusy hops. Not bad.

By far the best beer they have at Fairhope brewing. Excellent taste, and not too bitter. Clever name to boot.

Draft in the taproom. Poured black with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma was roast malt with some citrusy, piney hops. Flavor was roast malt, some burnt toast, lemon, grapefruit, pine. Mildly sweet, quite bitter. Medium mouthfeel.
