1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 TBone (9414) - Pori, FINLAND - DEC 21, 2007
Bottled, alc. 6.2 % (BB 07/2008)
Ugly muddy brown, off-white head, some lace. Sour, sticky nose. Sour, glueish flavor with ashy and vegetably notes. Who can drink this? Infected?
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 oh6gdx (16047) - Vasa, FINLAND - DEC 18, 2007
Bottled (thanks Bov!). Hazy nut brown colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is acidic, really sour fruity. Flavour is sour fruity and yeasty. Sourness to the extreme, made me think about if this actually was infected.
3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ungstrup (23961) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 21, 2004
The aroma is a little sour - is that what Oakes describes as phenolic - with notes of smoke, tar, rope, and hints of citrus. The color is hazy amber and it has a fine light brown head. The flavor is sour and smoked - turning into tar and grapefruit before a dry end sets in - the end is like chewing on a rope. This is a really interesting beer - I really like the smokiness, but it could be better with a little less sourness - as mentioned by a couple of other raters. But still a fine beer. Thanks to Alex (fiulijn) for bringing this specimen to Denmark.
3.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Oakes (10191) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 14, 2003
Golden brown; aroma is phenolic, with liquorice and smoke. The body is smokey and sour. Not sure the specific amount of acidity intended but this was quite sour. A bit of a niche product, as the ratings indicate, but I'm part of that niche.
2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 daboskabouter (1470) - Fergus, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 12, 2003
Slightly hazy amber color. Cheese (yuck) in the nose, slightly candyish. Lightly tart body, sweet and fruity. Short. Smoked? Don't even have anything written down about that.
1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Mads Langtved (2246) - Copenhagen K, DENMARK - MAR 25, 2003
Pretty unclean. Like a mild version of Refsvindinge Skibsøl. Strong meat flavor and pretty smoked and a little watery at the same time. Not something I enjoyed.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Hildigöltur (5107) - København, DENMARK - MAR 24, 2003
Amber colour. Nice acidic aroma with bacon notes. The flavour is not very good but very funny. It tastes like "Fynsk rygeost" (Smoked cheese from Funen). It will probably take time to fully enjoy this strange brew.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 omhper (15959) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - FEB 1, 2003
UPDATED: FEB 24, 2003 Bottled. Amber coloured. Bamberg style beechwood smokey nose, but quite subtle. Light bodied and slightly acidic. Fairly soft mouthfeel and low bitterness. A bizarre and subtily flavourful beer with loads of things going on, not all of them pleasant though.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Bov (7364) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - DEC 13, 2002
UPDATED: NOV 18, 2007 re-rated 11/2007: - cloudy brown in colour with a little beige head which does not persist very long; a gentle smokey maltiness is met by some hoppy notes below; caramel and nutmeg; yeasty; good malt body with a hint of late sourness; unclean palate; long caramelish and toasted/smoked finish - better than the 1st version but still not my kind of beer
amber colour, absolutely no foam, slightly smoked with notes of berries, very light-bodied, refreshing with a long sourness in the finish - some subtility but not really my kind of beer (2/5/4/3/9)
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 fiulijn (10396) - Como, ITALY - JAN 30, 2002
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2003 [Rerate] And here comes the Fall 2002... Still the nice smokey flavour, almost flat and they didn"t get rid of the sourness.
[2002-01-30,6-4-7-3-15] Amber ale, with a frothy head. Oak aroma. Good body, very nice hint of smoked malt (it"s a pleasant sensation, without overwhelming the other components); unluckly this batch has suffered fermentation problems and it expresses an evident sourness in the taste and in the palate as well. Let"s wait the Fall 2002...
