500mL bottle with a very ugly label! Hazy apricot coloured ale with a lasting off-white head. Heady and rather musty nose holds at the same time lots of alcohol and lots of esters (peach and banana fruitiness). Considerable leafy and earthy hops never manage to overtake the strong alcohol nor the oxidized feel of musty, cobwebby attacks. Poor.

Cask at the Derby Winter Beer Festival. A pleasant aroma of toffee and some malts. The flavours of buttery toffee and sweet malts are well-balanced for something this strong but I still found it a bit too sweet. The booziness overshadows all the flavours as well.

Cask at the Derby Winter Beer Festival. 2006 vintage. I’m not sure barley wine is the right style for this beer. For me, it seemed to be going for a more yeasty. astringent Belgian sort of style. It’s surprisingly quaffable and fruity for the ABV; I think of a barley wine as being richer and more powerfully flavoured. This, however, is enjoyably fruity enough and, drunk after an imperial stout of similar strength, almost refreshing.

Bottled at RBESG 2007. An orange beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with a light touch of caramel, while the flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of alcohol, which burns in the throat.

Bottle, RBESG 07. Sweet, warming beer - the warmind due to the alcohol. Some fruit, but dominated by the treacle from the malt.

Bottle, at RBESG 2007 in Glasgow, Grand Tasting. Hazy golden brown colour, large off-white head. Nice oaky aroma, some fruity hops too. Malty flavour with fruity hops, the high ABV is noticeable but not too dominant.

A Sim rate (RBESG tasting): Complex aroma that’s sweet, wheaty, hoppy and very nice. Amber colour with nice lacing. Tastes like heather, and various other herbs. Hops again and a bit of yeast.
