August 19, 2012 - on draught at King William IV Witterfest. Black with a light brown creamy little head. Deep roast aroma, some alcohol, baker’s chocolate, a little earthy and herbal, not sweet at all. Taste follows, maybe a hint of woodsmoke, some fruit (like trailmix), a little oak or vanilla sweetness that wasn’t in the aroma ... nice balance, I particularly like the earthiness of the cocoa nibs (I assume that’s what that is). Pretty solid body, chewy, mild carbonation, long boozy/malty finish, dry earthy bitterness emerges more in the linger. Nice.

On tap at the King William IV - Witterfest. Opaque black beer, little tan head. Viscous soft palate - airy. Nice rich unsweet chocolate. A little coffee and a trace of vanilla. The soft palate keeps going, airy too! Tangy dark fruits bring up the rear. Soft semi dry finish. Nice.

Bottle at Chriso’s 2012 Pre-GBBF Shindig, London. Pours deep black with a monstrous brown foam head. Lots of dark fruits in the nose, cocoa, dark bread. Big sweet flavor with strong bittersweet chocolate, some dirt, mild spice, alcohol, burnt wood. Full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Moderately sticky finish, sweet, with plenty of bitter chocolate, burnt earth. Very good, nicely balanced by a sturdy bitterness. Nice.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2012. Poured a thick & oily black with a thicky & creamy dark tan head to match. Big aromas of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruits, liquorice, rum raisin, spice & demerara sugar. Huge for 10%. So much roastiness, rum raisin, prune, chocolate, coffee, dark, dried fruits & liquorice. Full, chewy body, gently warming with a lingering, heady malt bitterness. It’s a big beer & the alcohol is well hidden. Thoroughly enjoyable.
