Could it be that I’m souring on Fantome?
Light orange pour with a nice white head and thick lacing, Sour cidery aroma, flavor of over-ripe-to-the-point-of-spoiled oranges, sweet, sticky, and maybe slightly off in a Fantome way. Not dry enough for my taste, basically. Moderate herbal spicing. It’’s good, I guess...but not something I have any need to revisit. paiste2002 (148), Saugus, California, USA Aug 19, 2009 750ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a huge white head leaving behind some very nice lace. Aroma is tart, spicy, earthy and funky. Flavor is slightly tart, woody, earthy, spicy, bready yeast. Some honey and tartness in the finish. Very enjoyable beer. Oakes (8057), gone rambling, Vietnam Aug 9, 2009 Bottle, thanks MiP! Hazy tan. Slightly tart aroma in that Fantomish way. Some spicy notes - pepper and coriander. Very peppery character. Tart, funky but in a stylish restrained way. Fantome weirdness again. MiP (8792), Sønderborg, Denmark Aug 6, 2009 Bottle, 8%. Fruity and funky aroma. Cloudy orange colour. Very small white head. Good citric flavour, mildly sweet with a good funky note. Mildly Bretty. High carbonation. omhper (12147), Stockholm, Sweden Aug 6, 2009 Bottled, thanks Oakes & Beershine! Cloudy pale orange. Funky barnyard aroma. Dryish with some yeasty vinegary tartness. Lactic with vital elastic malt. Lots of brett. Light salty finish. Ansolutely lovely! Beershine (2677), Hue, Vietnam Aug 3, 2009 Bottle, shared by MiP. Light hazy orange with small fizzy off-white cap. Aroma is a healthy dose of pedio funk, bones, fruit, white wine. Soft palate with lively nice effervescence. Nice sweetness with lactic character predominating the sour-funk. Mellow and smooth. Has lychee/rambutan. Very nice. ChristianScheffel (4402), Odense, Denmark Jul 27, 2009 Hazy yellow iwth a lasting white head. Aroma of herbs with rubber and medicine notes. Dry and herbal flavour with honey. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review date 1/21/2009...I must’ve got this at Premier in Buffalo just before Thanksgiving. 750 corked & caged into St. Bernie’s chalice.
There’s a single-finger head that dissipates quickly but leaves nice tight lacing. Quite a few floaties slipped through the goalie’s careful pour - woops! Tried to be gentle with it. Body is the color of bleached copper.
Absolutely electric on the palate. Slight Brett horse-blanket funk with extra-dry Champagne tones. Sour citrus goodness blends with balsa wood and hop pine to create perfect austerity. Wow.
What happened? This gets to be a lot more perfumy than what I would expect. The sour nose doesn’t really translate - I hate t say it but I’m getting some Andre Cold Duck here! It’s stronger than the now-mild Brett funk. Perhaps a little too much candi sugar sweetness. This finally dissipates with warmth for the most part but definitely leaves a trace. Still, wel-crafted overall.
Take out the excess candi sugar and this is great. Alas, it’s there so it’s merely very good. Balanced in Beautiful Chemistry with understated Brett, good core Saison yeast electricity, hop pine and dry light oak, this treats the palate nicely.
This drinks well but would do even better without the residual sweetness. Nicely done nonetheless in the "Old World" tradition.
