LilBeerDoctor (442), East Setauket, New York, USA May 11, 2008 Bottle (Also from Knightly Spirits, just as the rater below me...). Pours a dark brown with a light tan head that persists. Aroma of sweet/sour fruits (reminds me of a sour ale, like Duchesse de Bourgogne), also maybe some raisins. The flavor was a surprise, based on the aroma, very much of coffee and roast initially, as well as some sweet and sour notes. As the beer warmed, the sweet/sour notes became more pronounced. This is an interesting beer and not exactly what I expected from a saison (I have had exactly one beer that is similar to this--Captain Lawrence Smoke from the Oak Wine barrel, which is a porter...). Anyway, its blend of sourness and roast/coffee is fairly unique, so it was interesting to try. However, as I had more of it, I didn’t really care for it anymore, so in the end it was just ok.
AgentSteve (736), Livermore, California, USA Aug 18, 2008 Dark brown pour with a thin cream colored head. Malty, sweet, dried fruit nose that leads into the flavor. Dry and spicy, and subtly smokey, along with a slight sour influence. No hint of alcohol. gotbeach (121), San Diego, California, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle at BRSG08. Creamy dark pour with spice and pepper aroma and flavors. Nice body for a 10%. Very enjoyable. maniac (1949), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle while in San Diego on 08/01/2008 for the RBSG Friday Pub Crawl. 6 years old. Cloudy brown body with a frothy tan head. Rich molassas, caramel, rum soaked fruit aroma. More rum soaked fruit and caramel flavor. Medium full body with low carbonation. jarspag (503), San Diego, California, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle w/ Simon. Hazy amber color, aroma and flavor is very belgian...stays dry and fluffy. Not any annoying, xmas like sweetness, but some slight spice. Satisfying and tasty. stefanje (540), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Aug 4, 2008 Bottle at RBSG grand tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this. Murky brown pour with a small khaki head. Aroma was light with spices, funk and cocoa. The taste was also light with a bit of cola showing through and some sour orange peel. The mouthfeel was a bit on the thin and light side. The finish was medium in duration and sour. Overall: A very tasty saison, perhaps if I had not sampled this on a night of so many great beers I would be more enthusiastic.
