Dacrza (131), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Jan 4, 2008 A New Year’s Eve night capper as the ball dropped, so the senses of this review may be slightly hampered...reddish brown opaque body with a frothy white head that leaves no lace in a La Fin du Monde snifter....strong and dark....for sure, herbal and citrus aromas--tough to identify for my neophyte nostrils (Shan laughs at my thoughts of prunes)...intirguing lack of presence--a soft body built for summer, with a slight acidity--otherwise, pillow soft at 7.0 alcohol, indeed a triumph... fruity (grapefruity?) wheat with a hops presence, tart and medium-bodied finish...chosen out of season, this saison acts like a winter warmer minus the weight of the winter... I will return to this beer--and this review--in the summer, when the season may heighten an already impressive experience...
brewandbbq (186), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jun 17, 2008 Pours hazy chestnut with a two-inch head of beige. The dense foam receded slowly leaving some decent lacework before dissapating to a partial skim-coat.
Aromatics lead off with a blend of caramel, nuts, green apples, bitter greens, freshly turned sod, strawberry tops, and cherry pits.
Hints of almonds, freshly skinned bark, and musty cider follow through.
Medium bodied, creamy and a bit crisp. Fairly dry and a finely carbonated mouthfeel.
Light malt, cocoa dust, and apple skins start the pallet. Ripe fruit and grassy undertones follow through along with lemon-spritzed caramel.
Finishes lightly tart with lingering cherry skins, fresh cut hay, and apple pulp.
I was surprised at the restrained amount of sourness and acid. Very balanced, highly refreshing and extremely quaffable.
Bottle courtesy of BA Delerium..Thanks bro!
cmillward (136), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 7, 2008 Bottle @ ORL throwdown. Hazy gold with a fizzy white head topping it. On the nose I get apples, barnyard funk, grass, pepper, and a slight tartness. In the mouth its again fruity apples, pepper, hay, tart and sour. Drying, slight pucker to the finish. One of my favorite Fantomes of the evening. dchmela (601), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 2, 2008 O town Throwdown, bottle courtesy Beerlando. Amber orange pour with a thick white head. Aroma of apple, orange, black pepper and good belgian funk. Taste is clean and smooth, citrus hints and black pepper spice. Finishes a with a little citrus twing. i really liked this one. mcbackus (553), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Jun 1, 2008 bottle: pors a lively apple juice colour small littel bubble off white head very nice. aroma is a good peppery funky small lite apple, earthy. flavour is light some what floral, peppery very good, some good sweet sugars blend into it also with a touch of apple or pear. Beerlando (1134), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 1, 2008 Pours a clear orange-amber color. A foamy, cream colored blanket leaves soapy lines of lacing behind. The aroma is complex, showing fruity, golden apples and pears in the forefront, followed by musty, earthy floral notes and a healthy dose of spicy white pepper. Flavors were even spicier than expected, with the pepper really pushing through to the front. Pale candied malts, orchard fruits, earthy wildflowers, and dry, leafy green spices are all well blended. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Really nice and unique. This is one of my favorite Fantômes.
