JorisPPattyn (4282), Antwerpen, Belgium Oct 26, 2006 Huge, dirty-yellow & tenacious head over fully hazy amber to chestnut beer. Mintchocolate, coloured malts, rosemary and cypress aroma’s. And even some fresh (EU)hops. Roasted taste, ever so shortly moccha, but finishing in a dry tobacco flavour. Nose becomes intenser whilst drinking: like a toiletsoap for men, with pine & cypress, apples. There’s another very marked presence I cannot name. Pleasing taste. Medium bodied at least, some grist slickness, creamy & velvety MF, the large head helping. A good Fantôme: the dark ones I either hate or love. This is definitely the latter category. thebeertourist (1796), Oslo, Norway Sep 15, 2006 75 cl bottle. Cloudy amber with a medium head. fruity and very hoppy nose with sour undertones. Fruity flavours, refreshing sour-bitterness. Well-carbonated. A great saison. thewolf (3631), Kolding, Denmark Apr 27, 2008 Bottle. [thank you, Grovlam]
[at dedollewaitor’s Odense tasting]
Pours deep redish brown with a medium, frithy yellow-beige head. Fine lacing. Aroma is wonderfully spiced, some vanilla, some thyme, weak woodiness and apples. Low carbonation at first, but lives up in my mouth. Flavour is softly fruity tart, good apple tones, rather crisp and a fine caramel background. Quite earthy and dry finish. Dedollewaitor (2041), Odense, Denmark Apr 28, 2008 75cl bottle. Thank you TheWolf/Rene. My 400th Belgium rating. Pours muddy orange with a frothy white head. Aroma is sour, dry, earthy, yeasty, spicy & fruity - So Fantome’ish. Sprinkly/spritzy carbonation. Taste is fruity orange & some caramel. Very dry & earthy end. sayravai (3048), Helsinki, Finland Aug 31, 2007 (Bottled, 0.75l) Beautiful red-amber with w largeish, tight and foamy, lacy head. Surprisingly tart, earthy and peppery-spicy, wheaty-malty aroma. Pleasantly tart, dry and sourish-malty flavor with lots of berries and ashes, and not much hops. No signs of alcohol, but a long, ashy and dry aftertaste. Medium-bodied, slightly thin, not very carbonated palate. Quite an original brew - like Flemish sour, dry saison, Orval and schwarzbier mixed. Definitely not bad, though. This bottle was dedicated to the late Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson, who sadly passed away yesterday - and my wife’s grandfather, aged 91, who also left us last sunday. May both rest in peace with lots of beer.
