3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Reviewwed from notes. While I’ve had both batches of 5 Sciences, I will rate the 2nd batch since the 1st batch had the obvious infection problems. Opened at Fantomefest 2014, thanks Patty. Pours a cloudy orange in color with a finger and a halfs worth of off-white head. The nose is comprised of dank herbal notes, the type I remember in Sante! 14. In other words, this smells like weed...really dank weed at that. The flavor also has the weed present, but it’s also complimented by floral notes, spices, and some citrus peel. Light mouthfeel, good carbonation, and a moderate finish. Really happy this beer was remade after the first batch because the first batch was kind of a disaster.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
0.75l corked and capped bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. Looks really nice in the glass this with a big bright white lasting and lacing head over a near glowing orange cloudy body. Not bad. Smells aged, but I don’t think it’s a particularly old bottle. Kinda herbal and spicy in a way. I get dried clementine zest and wheat. Grapes and green plums. Traces of grass and lemon zest. Yeah, I like this aroma. Funky flavors. Not directly sour but it has a mild tart funkiness. Near gliding oily in the mouth and it’s just below average on the carbonation. There’s slightly sour fruity gooseberries, a herbalness hard to describe. More clementine bitter zest. Some wood hints. All in a a somewhat complex beer. Mild dandelion bitterness in the aftertaste. Not a bad one at all this. 08.10.2014

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle... Cloudy amber pour with pale rose highlights and a small, wispy, white head. Good retention. The aroma is an interesting blend of smokiness, fresh bandage and lemon peel. Medium-bodied with airy carbonation. The flavor is mildly tart and a hint smoky. Finishes tangy, tongue-numbing and fairly dry. Bottle courtesy of ctipping!

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
The beer appears golden with a thick white head. Aromas of spice, malt, oddities, well water, funk, earth. The beer definitely seems more Fantôme than Hill Farmstead. Weird, earthy, herbal. Flavors do not cooperate well. A jumbled mess of odd spices. Cracked black pepper with some fruity notes. I am not a fan of this one.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled April 2014
A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a slightly murky, light amber color that shows a lightly hazed, light straw color. The aroma smells earthy, lightly tart, and lightly funky, definitely Fantome like. Slightly musty, tart with a bit of apple cider vinegar character (strangely without the acetic focus though), with a soft, dried straw like, and pale cracker like grain aroma to it in the finish.
The beer is light bodied, but not thin, with a spritzy carbonation and a dry, slightly musty finish. The beer has a solid bitterness to it, with an herbal, woody character that seems evocative, if not from hops. Up front the beer has a touch of grassiness, and there is also a black pepper like spiciness that melds well with an earthy, grainy, pale malt character that tastes of dried hay, and raw grain crackers. There is a light tartness here that accentuates a citrus zest character (leans towards lemon), as well as suggesting of star fruit. This has suggestions of floral honey notes to it, but without any sweetness.
This is a really nice beer; I like that it is only at 6.5% rather than at the typical, Fantôme 8%. There is still lots of character here, and the beer finishes lighter and drier, which is a bonus. The bitter, herbal character is the dominant note in the flavor, but it is nicely accented by the soft tartness, suggestion of citrus, and light, earthy spiciness.
