2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Glouglouburp (5545) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - AUG 16, 2007
Dirty brown-orange body topped by an initially large tan head. Aggressive spicy nose (cloves, nutmeg, mint) along with a vinegary aroma. Something’s wrong... Infection! Infection! Acidic vinegar taste and a light ferrous oxidation is the first thing I noticed. That’s unfortunate cause when focussing and doing selective tasting I could feel the wicked funky yeast, eccentric spiciness, dry woody malts, earthy notes, etc.. The infection was light enough to avoid a drain poor but strong enough to make it hard to feel what the beer was really supposed to taste like. We all know that there’s always a remote chance to get infected bottles from Fantôme but they make such great beers that we all keep taking chances. Unfortunately I bought this one from Beer Circus in Brussels and it was rather pricey. I ended-up as disappointed as the day I learned Santa wasn’t real (I felt like I had wasted 25 years of my life).

Well preserved by jeffc666, and thanks of course! Loud pop and a super clear pour with nice carbonation, the color and presentation here was perfect. The aroma was sour cherries and red licorice an a little alcohol. A little like Black Ghost but not as intense. Flavors were iron, leather, pepper and cherries. The whole thing was very dry in the clear pour. Nice sipping. The dregs pour was a little harsh but still a good yeasty addition.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Joeh (2038) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - JAN 2, 2006
Bottle from Beers of Europe, with Christmas Lunch. Pours a dark, murky brown, slight head. Aroma is mostly fruit with a touch of sourness and a little spice. To taste this is medium bodied, very fruity, yeasty and tart with some spice. It’s pretty good, not 90 percentile stuff though, another Fantome that I expected more out of.

Pours deep brown, great red hue when held to light. Small tan head. Aroma has notes of raisins, chocolate, spice and yeasty bread. Flavour is sweet, though with a very spicy finish. Slightly tart in the finish, with a peppery aftertaste. Nice stuff.

[Sampled at the Pre-GABF Babblefest 2004] An unclear dark brown beer with a nice brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of yeast and spices. The flavor is also sweet with notes of yeast and spices - here coriander stands out, but it also has some hints of sourness to it.
