3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml. into footed glass. Kind of underwhelming. Nothing about this beer stood out to me. After reading the description, I now know that the occassional spiciness underneath the dark, non-sweet chocolate malt is black pepper, but that flavor never came to mind while drinking. Smooth and quaffable, surely, but without any of the stand-out uniqueness I’ve come to expect from Fantome.

2.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: FEB 5, 2014 75cl bottle shared with Dutchdrebus, Ansjelaah, judyvv and Joes @ weekly tasting. Opaque reddish color, small off-white to beige head. Smell malts, brett, saison-ish. Taste malts, herbs or spices, weirdness, pepper. Don’t like the taste at all, although the aroma is quite decent imo. Not my thing I guess.

A: Pours an orange-brown ale with hazy clarity. A single finger of white, soapy head falls eventually to a quilt of the same. No lace.
S: Apple, grain, yeast, some hay and funk. I quite like this, smells crisp, fruity, refreshing.
T: Saison with a funky edge to it. Some hay, some apple skins, some nice lactic tartness.
M: Heavy body with moderate carb. Dry crisp finish. Normally I would prefer my saisons to be a little thinner, but this suits the beer well.
O: Great stuff, not what I expected, and definitely I would recommend as a textbook example of the style, but excellent nonetheless. If somebody wanted to try something new in the saison category, I would recommend this.
