4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 23, 2012 Peculiar greyish tinge to the pour; but ultimately results in a deep, rustic amber in my snifter. Very beautiful in the glass, topped by a persistent graphite-yellow head. This Fantome is ’elusive’ and ’deceptive’, for sure. While, initially, ’simple’ and ’straightforward’; it slowly pulls back the veil to reveal its secrets. Nose is brimming with doughy yeast, spicy pepper, silly putty! funk, and countless dried herbal notes: think thyme, savory, and marjoram. Flavor rings true, swirling sweet earthy dough with the amalgam of herbal nuances. Mouthfeel is medium-thin, but ’oily’; which is cut by the mineral-laden, spicy/peppery finish. A brew of contrasts for sure. Robust, yet thin and nuanced. Bold, but strikingly subtle. The Fantome works his magic ... 4.5% abv, thank you!

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20
Pours a slightly hazy amber color with light white head. Something weird in the aroma, big rubbery phenolic up front. Some citrusy fruity esters come through after but still dominated by rubbery and light smoke. Flavor is much of the same, rubberband and smokey, tastes like burnt rubber with some peppery notes in the finish. Not sure what’s going on with this bottle but it is absolutely disgusting. It’s only redeeming qualities are that it’s fermented and cold.

1.6 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle from DrewFace. Pours Amber with lots of head. Aroma is wierd, hint if smoke and maybe some yeast? Taste is smoke, sweet, and other off-putting flavors. This is not good, maybe a bad bottle considering the other reviews? Hopefully we haven’t drank the same beer.

APPEARANCE: clear dark blond beer, small unstable off white head.
NOSE: herbs, little hops, green malts.
TASTE: herbs, malts, grains, little flat. Same herb combination again. Is this really 4,5% though? Tastes somewhat alcoholic...

27/IX/13 - 75cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) or De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: n/a (2013-901)
Clear dark orange to red beer, aery off-white to beige head, little stable. Aroma: very fruity, sugary, caramel, bit spicy, grapes, apple skin, slightly sourish. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: fruity start, little sour, apple skin, sweet and sugary as a main taste, little bitterness, fruity notes as well. Aftertaste: little bitter, very fruity, nice bitter hops, lots of citrus, feels alcoholic (which is pretty weird at 4.5%), sourish, sugary again, notes of caramel and toast at the end. A lovely beer, I tell you!
