lamas (709), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA Feb 3, 2006 750mL bottle. Pours a deep, cloudy ruby body with a thick, effervescent dark-khaki head. A deep, roasty malt aroma with some cocoa, milk chocolate, brown sugar, soy sauce and hints of vanilla beans and alcohol. Sour berries and plums are apparent as it warms. Medium-bodied, though not as thick as I was expecting from the aroma. Lots of roasty malts and cocoa start things off. Finishes with some sour yeastiness and hints of black pepper. Some creamy coffee throughout. The sour berries and plums are also apparent in taste as the beer warms. My girlfriend says this tastes like it would make a good marinade for steak. Seems like what you’d get if you crossed a foreign stout with a brown ale. (Rating #428) Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jan 6, 2006 Hazy brown ale with a light moka head. Light nutty funky aroma. Sour brown with nutty notes, wild berries, pepper, strange. Reminded me of spoiled brown ale, though. Mondiale 2005. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Dec 31, 2005 Whoa. What a cool beer. Dark brown, almost black body with a large head. Aroma is cocoa (not like chocolate malts) with some sourness like dark cherries. What the? Some spices there too. The cocoa flavoring is somewhere between Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (bad) and Sam Smith’s Oatmeal Stout (good). Despite how unorthodox this is, I think it worked well for a really interesting change. Unique to anything else I’ve had. jimmack (1221), Nutley, New Jersey, USA Dec 31, 2005 750ml. bottle thanks to Joeec5. Dark brown, almost black color with a medium sized tan head. Aroma was milder than other Fantome beers I’ve tried. Yeast, wet hay, malt and raisins are the aromas that stand out to me. Spicy flavor with lots of black pepper, figs and yeast. smoosh (523), New Albany, Indiana, USA Dec 24, 2005 Bottle - big fruity nose. Plenty of yeastiness as well. A beautiful beer. Ruby to purple body with hints of brown depending where the light is behind it. Nice head of beige bubbles. Bright palate. Slight fizziness. I’m having a hard time distinguishing individual flavors in this one. I see other raters point out dark fruits and black pepper. I get some of that. Also a quite sour finish. Enjoyable, but unremarkable. redlem (1155), Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2005 Updated: Dec 1, 2005This lacks the atypical Fantome distinictiviness associated with many of their beers. Dark in color with and aroma of wood, dark fruit, some sweetness. An alcohol sourness taste, allspice at end. An above average beer a below average Fantome. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 21, 2005 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev -- courtesy of tupalev. Pours a murky dark brown with an average size creamy white head. Nice lacing. Complex aroma of spices (especially black pepper), sour apples and other fruit, malt and much more -- it’s a hard one to describe. Spicy flavour is weird but in a good way: it starts sweet and ends sour and contains a multitude of flavours. The sourness is definitely the most prominent of the flavours. Palate’s a tad harsh, I’d prefer a little smoother. Truly a unique beer.
