Hopgeek (101), San Diego, California, USA Jul 27, 2005 Pours a dark brownish red hue, and makes a thick tan head. Musty aroma, like a barnyard, dark fruits like plums and cherries. Flavor is very interesting, cherries, bittersweet chocolate, spicy pepper, bakers yeast. Mouthfeel is thick and full on the palate, leaves a very rich coating on the throat. This is a tasty beer, well done and very interesting for the style. The funky characters take this to an unusual place. erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Jul 24, 2005 Pours a deep brown, almost black with a brown head. Aroma is of sour cherries, vanilla and very minor horse blanket. The flavor is med-light sour with that signature fantome complexity that most all of us love. The body is bigger than most of the fantome beers but still refreshing Very long dry finish. Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 22, 2005 Bottle: Poured a deep murky brown color ale with a huge dirty brown color head with good retention. Aroma of funky yeast, tart and strange spices. Taste is quite different from anything I had before and includes traces of unknown spices, roasted malt, funky yeast and a sour finish. Again, a very interesting experiment from Danny but IMHO not as good as the Strange Ghost. Paskal (146), La Prairie, Quebec, Canada Jul 19, 2005 Bouteille-Beaucoup d’amertume, de couleur rougeâtre-brune foncé. Goût de café-choco. TheBeerGod (3143), Newport News, Virginia, USA Jul 18, 2005 Bottle - corked and capped. My bottle actually has a purple color where the pink is in the picture to the left. Not sure which vintage this would be. Deep ruby brown. Small tan head. WOW! Nose is exquisite! Nose is roasted malts, hints of cocoa, light bittersweet chocolate notes, BIG spices, and light funk. Some nutmeg, faint cinnamon, light yeast, and dark fruits. Taste is a bit more bitter and spicy. Bitter herbs and spices with lighter hop notes. There’s a bit of a roasted character with dark fruits, light medicinal notes, spicy herbs and earthy funk. So good! Body is medium and very carbonated. Light lingering bitterness. Finishes with more roasty notes, light choco notes, overripe dark fruits, spices, and light hops. If I had one wish, it would be to have Dany P. brewing beers for me! pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden Jul 12, 2005 Dark brown colour. Rich head. I could go on and try to describe the complexity of the aromas and the flavours, but I think I will take the easy way out and put it like this; Fantôme Black Ghost smells and tastes A LOT like "Anchor Our Special Ale". biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Jul 9, 2005 Not black. More of a ruddy reddish brown with a thin tan head. Very complex aroma of bread, nuts, floral hops, some earthiness, some caramel, vanilla, a little tartness, even patchouli(?). Interesting flavor that emphasizes the earthiness. The spices are muted. Has a strange sour and chalky quality and some metallic astringency. Doesn’t come together for me and certainly not worth the nearly $20 a bottle. Although, I must say that it becomes more palatable as it warms, giving up some chocolate notes. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 6, 2005 Pour is deep deep brown almost black with a big dense tan head...smell is as beerhugger said yeasty malty and spicy...definately dates and maple...caramel chocolate nutmeg...taste is sweet and yeasty with a superb mouthfeel...some cocoa and chocolate and grapes and raisins...delightfully complex, but the nose is really what was so intoxicating...lingering spicy yeasty something going on in the finish...good...
