Commercial Description:
Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody's guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

Bottle (1997 Vintage) at the Laid Back Brussels Tasting (Feb 9, 2008)
Deep amber to brown body. Creamy, brown head with a good lace. Aroma of orange, hops, esters, wood, ... Moderately sweet, lightly bitter estery initial flavour. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish. Fruity flavour. Quite nice old beer, but misses some guts to go into hops or sweetness, the flavour keeps on waiting to make a decision and makes none afterall (but could be due to age). Anyway, nice, but could be better.

The color of a stout (almost black and opague), but with a less dense head. Malt, licorice, nutmeg and pepper in both aroma and flavor. Some sweetness, but that is overpowered by the spicy character of this beer. Reasonable balance, but too spicy for my likes.

Ugly as hell. Muddy, sceptic tank brown, with zero head, and plenty of weird sediment. Reminded me of the mixtures I used to make with apple juice, 5 different food colourings and half of my mother’s spice rack back when I was a kid. Horseblanket aroma, frankincense, plums and/or mincemeat fruit, minty freshness. Very acidic, tart with raspberry and blackberry tang, milk chocolate, oak and an all around aura of funkalishiousness, if you don’t mind the expression.
