Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody’s guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

Zythos Beer Festival, Sint-Niklaas, Belgium 2005. Dark brown colour with a medium baige head. Light sweet light roasted spicy aroma and a sweet malty taste. Medium body and a light alcoholic finish.

wonderful full bodied saison. with lush fruit and spice palate and a wonderful nose that just pleases in so many ways. just a lovely beer from a very adventurous brewer.

Goldorak (439) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 25, 2005
Ugly as hell. Muddy, sceptic tank brown, with zero head, and plenty of weird sediment. Reminded me of the mixtures I used to make with apple juice, 5 different food colourings and half of my mother’s spice rack back when I was a kid. Horseblanket aroma, frankincense, plums and/or mincemeat fruit, minty freshness. Very acidic, tart with raspberry and blackberry tang, milk chocolate, oak and an all around aura of funkalishiousness, if you don’t mind the expression.

Acidic, licorice, citrus-lemon, herbal, coriander and faint barnyard scents in the nose. Opaque brown coloured body with shy and diminishing tan head that recedes to ring. Strong acetic flavour is vairly vinegary with some notes of spice and wood that are somewhat akin to a Flemish Sour. Medium-light body with low carbonation. Somewhat astringent and puckering. Doesn’t have the usual unique Fantome mouthfeel. Bottle sampled at the Voyager par des Papilles group tasting Feb-05.

Very muddy brown color with a lot of yeast sediment and no head at all. Aroma of fruits, BBQ sauce, with a farm quality and some acidity. Very good sweet and acid flavor of fruits. Light to medium body, very soft carbonation. As usual, here’s a weird but very good beer from Fantôme.

rederic (2896) - montréal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 17, 2005
Deep brown color, with light foamy head, but it falls quickly, the aroma is one of medicinal herb notes and anise. The palate is winey, tart, vinegary, this beer has all the symptoms of an infected beer. What a shame

lachesis (756) - St Idesbald, BELGIUM - FEB 16, 2005
Intens dark brown beer with medium beige head. Caramely hints in the nose with touches of fruit-jam, pine-wood, cakes and medicinale sirup. Full mouthfeel with aroma’s of red fruits, malts, dark malts, cocolate and again this medicinale bitterness in the taste.

MullMan (1099) - New Jersey, USA - FEB 3, 2005
ruby brown color, slightly cloudy. creamy and foamy tan head, medium last. yeasty, horseblanket, slightly vinuous nose. some tart cherry aroma too. fizzy carbonation, light mouthfeel. oakey flavor, not sour as I was expecting. dry finish. hidden yeasty flavor, malty too. a bit of alcohol. on the sour side of a belgian strong ale.
