More of a really dark brown ghost actually, with a fluffy brown head--how cute! Nose is mild, fruity and a bit spicy with a touch of roast. Nicely balanced with soft carbonation, maybe a bit watery on the palate. As I look deeper, I find more and more woody, almost smoky notes along with some tart cherriosity. 8.5% ABV nowhere to be found until your head starts swimming a little bit and you start seeing dark brown ghosts all over the place.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep dark ruby. Some warming alcohol, exotic spices, bits of cinnamon and more grassy herbals. Plenty of dark malt, but not too roasty. Very heavily spiced, a bit dischordant really. The alcohol is rather prevalent as well. Definitely not my favorite fantome, yet still with some charms of its own.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
The tan head is huge and creamy. Very dark brown body with just a hint of orange on the edges. Rich aroma of sour apples and sour cherries. It also has some hints of barnyard and a little bit of vinegar. The taste is not sour at all! The smells threw me off. It has tastes of the darkest chocolate you have tasted along with some cheese. The finish has some oaken woodiness, black pepper and a little bit of tobacco. A very interesting brew. I need to try a few more of these mysterious and challenging Fantomes.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Wonderful beer! Pours dark brown into the glass with a thick lingering mocha colored head. Aroma of sour cherries, almost identical to New Glarus Belgian Red in aroma! Flavors though deceive the palate with barnyard and dark chocolate standing out. Some tartness, but the malt really comes out here.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cloudy Reddish brown, big sturdy tan head. Citrusy aroma. Starts off rather tart, like one would espect a Saison. There is a musty, esrthy taste in the middle, and finishes with a smoky, woodsy flavor. Undertones of fruit throughout, but subtle. Thanks to Footbalm for this trade!

color is a soft deep garnet red, head is beige, thick and creamy. nose is slightly woody, plenty fruity, lots of cherry, and a bit of raisin..having a very difficult time picking up spices in the nose...more wood and cherry than anything in the nose. flavor is initially alcohol, mild notes of chocolate and wood, surprisingly dry, moderately tart....this beer smells as though it is going to have a sweet/sour thing going on...what a surprise, the flavor just ends up dry and woody.

Murky cloudy brown. Very full roasted spiced nose, tart on the tongue at first, then changing to a musty flavor of woody yeast and prickly burnt fruit and charcoal.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Uncap...but, wait, there’s a cork! Oh, anticipation....making me wait...POP!!!, and ...sour is the scent at first, ...now, we pour...color is magenta, a deep crimson, dark and mysterious, big beigish froth that zips down to nada quick.
Aroma, tart, at first, then mellow, dark fruits dominate, sour citrus leads the way, but never goes too far...quite nice.
Taste it, already! Mmmm! Wow,plums, grapes, dates, even, ...mmmm, i like it. Very different from other Fantomes I’ve had. Simple, yet complex, flavor aplenty. The label pegs it as an "ale brewed with spices", but I’m not sure which. None jumps out, none screams and shouts, but, as I get deeper into this bottle, I like it more and more and the flavors flood every little center of my senses. Tasty, spicy, ...utterly enjoyable, in every way. Zip, zip, zip, Mr. Beer greets Mr. Palate with tastiness aplenty every time lip meets cup and the taste lasts for seemingly forever. Goodness, it makes itself so familiar in the the mouth, it may as well pay me rent.
I need more, but my glass, and the bottle, is nearly spent...oh, so sad...that was, as they say in the Americas, "tast-eee!
Hurrah...I’ll be dreaming of this for some time to come.
