MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Mar 27, 2009 Poured from a corked 750ml bottle and served in a tulip. A dark mahogany brown pour was capped by a tall, lasting, fizzy head of light brown foam. A coat of fine, bubbly lacing covered the sides of the glass. The aroma included dark candi sugar, dusty yeast, dark pitted fruits, light herbal spice, and a hint of soured malt. The flavor was made up of caramel, cherry pits, red apples, light spices, and was lightly acidic. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had a moderate amount of crisp, aggressive carbonation. Not as exciting or interesting as the other Fantômes I have tried, but still decent. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Mar 11, 2009 3/11/2009: Compared to most Fantome brews, the aroma of Black Ghost is fairly straight forward; it has a big caramelized aroma, fruity, with subtle spices. The flavor, however, is completely off the wall (as expected). So, what does it tastes like? Quite honestly, I have no idea how to describe it. I can tell you that it is completely unique and tastes nothing like the aroma and is unlike anything you have ever had. It reminds me of mildew or something, but not really. Definitely earthy and herbal, slightly roasty; but beyond that I don’t really have any good descriptors for it to really capture the flavor. It might also be a bit oxidized and/or corked. Just go get a bottle and try it. Tom, thanks again for sharing, but maybe you should stop getting Fantome beers since none of us ever have any idea how to truely describe the characteristics of the beer. Final thoughts: Good, interesting, and undescribable!

Poured clear dark brown color with a large fizzy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma was as complex modetate spicy nutty sweet and alcohol. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Heavy dark fruit bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet finish with medium alcohol bite.
Good strange brew. arrogantb (695), Denver, Colorado, USA Mar 10, 2009 750ml bottle $14.99. Not nearly black, more dark brown with a funky aroma. Funky flavors like white grapes, malt, very little tartness, I wouldn’t say this is quite sour. There is a little bit of dustiness to the flavor too. Overall, this is enjoyable if you like Fantome.

Pours a nice hazy copper with ample yeasty sediment and a foamy light-tan head. Quite a pretty beer. Perfect mouthfeel, carbonated just right, full but not at all sticky. Nice yeasty fantome nose, plenty of apple and caramel, but the flavor is where this one really shines. Tangy sour-rustic flavors, right up there with some of the really awesome (lighter) sours, whispers of chocolate and yellow curry, lots of grapefruit-sections (no pith!), cobweb and moldy apple. The first sip didn’t knock me head over heels exactly but over the course of the bottle I’ve falled hopelessly in love. I can’t express just how much @$$ this beer kicks, but it is yet another one of those beers that reminds me how much I love great beer. JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2009 Darker color with some copperish & off-smelling aromas. Flavor has an odd spice, coppery, roasty vinous thing that I can’t seem to enjoy. Bad bottle? The first Fantome that I didn’t really like much at all. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Feb 17, 2009 Dark amber and very cloudy with a small off-white head.
