Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody’s guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers Beer Store, Bury St Edmunds.Murky brown pour with a beige head. Raisin, toffee, honey and caramel aroma. Caramel and sweet spice flavours. Very dusty, earthy taste. Bitter mouthfeel. Bitter-sweet finish. Odd but interesting.

Bottle from Etre Gourmet. Pours cloudy dark brown with lots of floaties, big creamy light tanned head. Aroma of herbs and spices, pepper and dust...Taste is fresh and yeasty in a good way, lots of pepper, dark fruits and some pleasant sour and tart. Fizzy and clean mouthfeel. Me like a lot.

Pours a muddy brown with a large tan head. Smells of leather, yeast, smoke. The taste is dry, spicy, herbal dryness - this one leaves my mouth bone dry and slightly bitter. Medium body with fairly active carbonation. I’m not sure what is going on with this beer....it isn’t bad but it might be going sour. It is certainly interesting and complex.

Muddy brown with medium but brief head. Really sour and bitter taste. Hardly any sweetness. Grape fruit and stomach acid in the flavours. Watery texture.

75cl Bottle at UDRBM, thanks Harmen. 2012 edition. Super slimey brown pour, off-white head. Aroma of light smoke, roast, brown malts, a bit salty. Flavour is light salty, smoke, light iodine, light sweet, tart, hint of smoke in the earthy finish, but all flavours were very light and muted. Full slimey mouthfeel, thin bodied. Not what it’s supposed to be I guess. Hope my other bottles are better...

Bottle @ tasting. Weird settling gelatine like pour. Aroma is dusty hay, some smoky notes, faint caramel. Flavour is slight smoke, some malt, but the substance is just too disturbing.

Strange structure to this one.... Murky, copper and beige. Wholewheat bread, meaty, rubber and malts. Slimey texture, but actually mild taste. Strange, very bitter. Not quite what it’s supposed to be? (UDRBM)

UPDATED: APR 12, 2013 Bottle at UDRBM. Mutky brownish pour, thin white head. Pours some slimey liquid, quite bizarre. Aroma is spicy, smokey, quite some yeast and some strange substance that should probably not be in here. Flavor is spicy, cinnamon, smoked malts, some sugars and heavily carbonated. Body is like slime, extremely full bodied, but a bit too weird. Is this supposed to be like this?

This is wrong. There are echoes of the Saison here, presumably process and yeast are somewhat similar. But the unusual twang provided by the bugs is now masked with a bit of dark malt, perhaps enhancing smokiness, and, seemingly, bigger hops. This converts a refreshingly tart beer to an astringently bitter one, without the balance of those New World citrus flavours. Just too much; not greatly balanced, difficult to drink.

Bottle shared with friends from stirchley wines
Pours murky dark brown with a bit of head, plenty of carbonation and a sweet but slightly funky aroma. Unfortunately this looks and drinks a mess, thin body but quite bloating, some bitterness and roast notes but not much else. Pricey drain pour :(
