Commercial Description:
Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody's guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

Bottle. Courtesy of hallinghansen. Black body with a small head. Aroma is blackcurrant with spices, cherry and other fruits. Creamy body. Flavour is very fruity with blackcurrant in front. It ends up with a citric sour finish. Loved it.

750ml from mashmaster - thanks, Tom! I wonder what this beer used to be like, since the commercial description still refers to a stout, which it may have been in some distant incarnation. Anyways, the body is dark orange, slightly cloudy, just shy of amber. Nose is only faintly yeasty, some typical Fantome musk (is there such a thing?). The body is a bit too thin, alas, even though there’s more carbonation than in some others from this brewery. Light spice, sour apple in the taste. I’d call it a middle of the road Fantome, which is to say that while it’s not especially surprising or mind-blowing, it’s still enjoyable.

750ml bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Garnet body topped by an off-white head. Smells of red grapes, tart, dusty. Tastes of musty cellar, roasted chestnuts, olives, slightly tart, with just a hint of cherry and wood. Body is a little flat and thin. Clean finish with a slight burn and drying effect. Don’t know how this started out as a stout but it does not resemble one in the least. Decent, but not at all what I was expecting.

750ml - Aroma starts in the barnyard and quickly turns into dark fruits and spice. Prune, alcohol and coriander. Pours opaque brown with a medium lasting head and great lacing. Flavor is a wonderful combo of a traditional Belgian quad and Fantome funk. Palate is tart and tangy. Very nice offering from Fantome.

Copper brown color with a medium to thick light tan head. Aroma is lightly sweet, a touch yeasty and a bit of toasted grains and caramel. Flavor is initially slightly sweet, then a touch of sour shows up quite quickly. Flavors of caramel, honey and the tart edge of pie cherries (though no cherry flavors are prevailent). Finish is clean, refreshing and leaves you longing for another taste.

Bottle from tytoanderso, thanks Ty! Poured a deep, murky brown color with a thick, dense beige head that receded to a layer and left some webby lacing. Intricate nose that includes some light chocolate, caramel draped vinious fruits, some light wood, a bit of barnyard yeastiness, and a bit of light citrus fruit. Lightly tart entry with some hints of citric fruit (lemon, orange, even a hint of grapefruit) leading into a lightly spicy, dry yeastiness with more fruitiness consisting of crisp apples and plum, transitioning into a soft undertone of chocolate hiding under a moderately tart finish with a hint of oak. Low carbonation with a nice dry yeasty/woody bite. Definitely unique, but I actually liked this much more than I anticipated after reading the description. Thanks Ty!

750 ml bottle - dark brown, head disappears quickly; mostly clear with quite a few floaties; aromas are musky, sweet, spicy; almost a wine-like quality to the aromas, but i can’t quite put my finger on it; flavors are very odd; stale, woody, malty and very dry; slightly bitter, but mostly just a strange beer; nearly flavorless, but still slightly off-putting; a little sour and almost like dirt too; not sure what to make of my first crack at a fantome brew
