1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
750mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of leather, smoke, horse blanket – what a clusterfuck of weird shit. Flavour is all over the place as well, with leather, smoke and oranges, and some vegetal qualities in back. WTF – another messed up Fantome beer, and this one is a total disaster.

1.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
750ml bottle pours a hazy and foamy orange color. Off-putting rubbery smoky aroma with a hint of pumpkin and spices. The flavor is a disgusting mix of bandaid, silly putty, and spices. Nasty. Crisp palate and good carbonation, but that doesn’t come close to saving this sloppily made disaster. Got reamed to the tune of $23 for this at Brouwerij Lane. Majorly weak.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Deep orange. Sticky, frothy white head adorns the glass with ornate lacework. Peculiar nose of unripe peach, vanilla, candy corn, peaty smoke, and puttylike yeast. Lightly vegetal, as well. Fine, creamy carbonation. Flimsy body. Opens with a moderate tartness which scratches at the tongue with an irony coarseness. Ensuing peatlike smoke imparts a subtle numbing effect by way of iodine, as waxy notes strongly poke through while the smoke persists. Very little depth to speak of, aside from the candy-cornlike sugars, and as the unripe peach tartness runs rampant the body is consequently rendered mostly hollow. With the exception of a dry dusting of cookie malt, virtually no malt remains to fill in the gaps left behind by the sugar-negating tartness. Humdrum, predominantly peat-smoke-filled finish disharmoniously trails a concrete and ironlike astringency. Hmm, what is presumably unintentional tartness, while manageable, is certainly strong enough to be off-putting. I love the unbridled creativity that went into crafting this, but this is not one of Dany’s finer offerings.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Thanks for the taste Richard.
Lots of carbonation, foamed everywhere. The sediment was mixed into the beer so it poured an ugly brown. Aroma was herbal, zesty, smokey, and caramelly. Not bad but the smoke is disconcerting. In the flavor the pumpkin seeds are noticeable but if I didnt know ahead of time what they were I probably wouldnt have guessed. Plenty of caramel and yeast flavors as is typical in Fantome but the smoke is present again with a touch of plastic. Some orange flavor as well.
I wanted to love this beer but I couldnt. Oh well.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bottle. Gusher! Corked and caged, with a nice big pop when opened. After the initial gush, it controlled itself. Unfiltered orange-tan. Big frothy white head. Zesty aromatic aroma, lots of lemon, lime, almost citron aroma. An interesting beer certainly, nice mouthfeel helps navigate through the myriad of unique Fantome flavors/ingredients. Sort of has the gingery spiciness of a pumpkin ale, but also a solid lemony sour background, and a clean golden, maybe a hint of amber wheaty malt. Intense boozed ginger-marmalade kind of thing going on. Really quite sour, in a gingery way, approaching pineapple. Just an off the wall beer all around, and while it does capture some halloween/pumpkin beer tones, it twists and warps them around to create something new. Apricot finish. Lots of depth, Rugged and overbearing, not exactly the best beer, but an interesting beer experience certainly.

MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: bit smoky, sweet caramel, sugary, quite some alcohol, bit of citrus, spices. Aftertaste: pretty smoky, sweet caramel, bitter hops, bit dusty, even more smoke. Love this beer!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A vigorous pour into my Bruery tulip produces a three finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a muddled amber color that shows a hazy, orange / bright-amber hue when held up to the light. As I pour this aromas of fruity leaning, lightly spiced, pumpkin like pie. A more focused inspection of the aroma also sees me noticing a light smoky note. At times a soft candy like note comes through; what kind of candy I am not sure, a bit honey like, almost something like a peppermint candy cane, but without the peppermint if that makes any sense. This last, may in fact some sort of light herbal character.
Lightly sweet, with an even fainter tartness, the beer has a nice effervescence (quite lively actually), and the body has light medium texture to it. There is a squash like flavor here somehow (leaning towards butternut or acorn), this is accentuated by the light, perhaps honey leaning sweetness, and a soft fruitiness. The fruit character is fairly non-specific, perhaps leaning toward hints of melon, some apple, some floral plum, and maybe even some tropical fruit character. There is a smokiness to this beer in the finish, a light phenolic character, and even some clove like character, and perhaps even a touch of plastic at times. The plastic and other phenolics seems to be accentuated by the carbonation, as the carbonation dies down these get more subdued. The spice character is fairly pronounced here, at least for a Saison, but it is still at a level that it keeps you guessing quite a bit; theoretically it could be all yeast derived, but I am pretty sure that is not the case. Teased spice notes of cinnamon, perhaps some ginger, nutmeg, hints of cardamom, and even some touches of fennel. Touches of maple couple with the smoky notes and the sweetness to suggest at a woodiness. The malt character is quite soft here, but provides a touch of whole grain cracker notes, some soft brown sugar notes, and perhaps a touch of chewy spice bread.
Quite nice, I wasn’t quite too sure what to expect from this, but I am quite enjoying it and it strikes a nice balance between the spice, fruit, phenolics, and other notes. This definitely lives up to the label quite well, definitely evocative of the fall / Halloween season.
