3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Interesting! First time I have tried something that wasn’t on rate beer already.
My supplier Dave recommended I tried this because he hadn’t yet, and he had several in stock, so here goes!
Amazing smell as the cap is taken off and the cork pulled. Rich active spice, coriander, pumpkin, apricot and bonfire smoke!
Pours apricot/cloudy apple juice colour, a head does form (see pic) but quickly dissapears. No lace on glass at all, infact doesn’t stick to the glass in any way, looks like I hadn’t drunk of the glass at all when I was done! Plenty of sediment in bottom of bottle, will try not to distrurb that as I get further down the bottle.
Flavour (at around 12’C) is very different, smoky alcoholic Belgian woody character, but with no hop character that I can find. No one flavour dominates, it is well balanced, but odd. You can’t put your finger on it, maybe it’s the lack of hops that’s weird, but you gotta keep sipping to find it. It does taste higher than 8% and as it was bottled in August and I am drinkin it 2nd November maybe it is too young yet, will maybe stash another bottle and try in a year or so. Will leave it a while and try colder anyways, but I like to try beers warmer as you get so much more character though it having more energy.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Batch 1 purchased from Etre Gourmet a year or two ago. Been sitting quietly in the cellar since, figured I would give it a spin tonight. Pours a relatively clear amber/orange in color with about a finger and a halfs worth of off-white head. Nose is comprised of cantalope, pumpkin spice, and honeydew melon. Flavor mirrors the nose in that it’s predominately cantalope and melon with some backing pumpkin and a light tart finish. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, slight sweetness, a little sticky, and a long finish. Big step up from the last bottle I opened about a year ago. The smoke is nonexistent at this point and this has morphed into an extraordinary beer. I worry that bottle variation will prevent me from picking up more of this in the future, but I would love to see how this develops.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Corked and capped bottle from Tipples. Lot number 25-8-12. Pours mostly clear orange with a small off white head. Funky yeast aroma, spice, lots more funk, light hops, hay and grass, some fruity sweetness. Flavor is light hay, fruit sweetness of apples and pears, peaches/apricots, bananas, some spice, cloves, lots of farmhouse hearty funk. Has some tripel notes and Saison notes. Prickly carbonation and medium mouthfeel. I am really enjoying this one and wish I had it in the fall as it would make a nice autumn seasonal. Not sure why the ratings are so low here unless they made a bunch of bad batches before this (I guess characteristic of Fantome).

Bottle. Murky orange amber, with an off white head. Aroma of funky yeast, bread, and musty. Flavors of bread, banana, funk, leather, yeast, some sweetness, and finishes with some metallic bitterness. Weird.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Really surprised reading the other reviews on this. This tastes to me like a smoked beer. Heavy smokey wood, bandaids, cloves, and bananas. Really odd in a fantome sort of way.
