Commercial Description:
With joy and a little bit of mischief, Fantôme brewer Dany Prignon dedicates this very bitter beer to all of the many varieties of brise-bonbons - literally, ball-breakers - in the world. Specifically, this beer is meant for wise-guys, braggarts, pains-in-the-ass, muck-rakers, troublemakers, know-it-alls, stuffed-shirts, blow-hards and bores, as well as nut-cracking, wind-bag, prattling-on, self-appointed experts on everything, and nose-in-the-air snobs, convinced they can do anything better than you. Dany intended to make a beer too bitter for a normal person to enjoy. The problem is, everyone loves it! Guess we're all just a bunch of brise-bonbons sometimes...

750ml bottle. Clear amber color with a medium head. Aroma is peppery spice, grass and sweet pear. Taste has an astringent ’bite’ to it. Finish is mostly dry. Medium body.

750mL bottle, shared with artusory. Pours a hazy, golden-orange color with fine particulates floating around; off-white head with a thin layer retained and medium-bubbled lacing. Syrupy aroma: overripe fruits, trail mix, and bananas; quite sweet. Medium-to-full, funky mouthfeel: chewy belgain sugars and overripe dried fruits; simply too sweet and too overripe, with a mild spiciness and vanilla note in the finish; ends dry with some dough. Underwhelming.

Pours a bright but cloudy gold with a really fizzy head... I had to wait a few minutes for it to die down. But that’s fine, because I could just enjoy the wonderful bubblegum aroma. Haven’t had anything like it. The flavor is a standard, but really great spiced saison with some fruits, probably the best I’ve had so far. Really refreshing and fun.

Pours a foggy gold with almost no head even off a very firm pour. Nose is typical yeast buta bit more sugar. Nice earthy qualities on the edge there too. Flavor is very hearty and earthy. Somewhat sugared since it has a touch of a sweet edge to it. Feel is a bit thin. Not as "meaty" as I would have liked. Overall pretty drinkable. another solid saison from Fantome.

Cloudy gold, with a white head. Aroma is lemon, yeast, spices, and a little funk. Flavor is spices, citrus fruit, yeast, and a little funkiness. Not as sweet as the aroma makes you think. Ends on the dry side. Thanks to footbalm for this bottle.

750ml Bottle purchased ’06 tasted Sept ’07.

My first Fantome, and every expectation was fulfilled. This is a world-class beer.

Pours a hazy light amber with a rich white head. Lovely aroma, musty farmhouse character layered over rich lemon tartness. The flavor is likewise superb: again a lovely saison character, more lemon-tart than bitter, dusty, hints of honey and hay, deeply complex flavors yet splendidly drinkable. Full smooth mouthfeel, creamy yet no hint of alcohol burn or thickness.I would have called it 6.5-7% rather than 8% if I hadn’t known. Marvellous!

Bottle from A Southern Season drank tonight with Henning and Tye. Pours a great hazy golden with a thick white head that lasts with perfect white lacing. Every fantome I have ever had has been a perfect pour and this is no different. Nose is bitter with some typical fantome funk, a little buttery, some spices. Flavor also has a little bit of a buttery note to it (infection?)with some strong bitter hops, some spices, some honey and a little citrus. I enjoyed this, but I sorta think I got an infected/not properly stored bottle because of the buttery notes which I dont see listed in any other reviews here. I would like to try this again. Did Dany make it more than just this one time?
