Commercial Description:
With joy and a little bit of mischief, Fantôme brewer Dany Prignon dedicates this very bitter beer to all of the many varieties of brise-bonbons - literally, ball-breakers - in the world. Specifically, this beer is meant for wise-guys, braggarts, pains-in-the-ass, muck-rakers, troublemakers, know-it-alls, stuffed-shirts, blow-hards and bores, as well as nut-cracking, wind-bag, prattling-on, self-appointed experts on everything, and nose-in-the-air snobs, convinced they can do anything better than you. Dany intended to make a beer too bitter for a normal person to enjoy. The problem is, everyone loves it! Guess we're all just a bunch of brise-bonbons sometimes...

750ml bottle poured a hazy golden amber with a large lasting head, leaving nice lacing as i indulge. Aromas of citrus, yeast, spices and a bit of milkiness. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of citrus, apple, a hint of spice and some herbel notes with a crisp, dry finish. The bottle says this is a very bitter beer, but DeRanke XX and Urthel Hop-it are more bitter.

Lightly hazy medium gold. Soft herbal aroma, some slightly odd buttery (hint of diacetyl) and milky (lactose) aromas. Flavor is missing the odd aromas, execpt for a hint of diacetyl. Soft mouthfeel, perhaps a touch more hoppy (bitterness and flavor) with a rounded soft herbalness. Certainly not my favorite fantome, but that doesn’t mean its bad stuff.

Pours a murky yellow with a small white head. Aroma is tart and yeasty. Notes of vinegar. Flavor starts sweet and tart with yeastiness and apples. Dry finish. Light to medium body.

This orange ale poured with a decent off-white head. It tastes (and looks) more like Orval than a saison, although it is lightly flavored with spices and has some citrus notes. The quality is up to Fantome standards, making this a very satisfying brew.

750 mL bottle, capped & corked (2005 version, ~6 months old): golden amber with a cloud-like fluff on top. Soft, yeasty esters with freshly bake dough and hints of pepper. Smooth, buttery texture on the tongue. Fresh herbs, honey, white grape skins and iron mix well and leave a subtle lingering bitterness in the back of the mouth. Whole, toasted black peppercorns are the star here: not quite as spicy as you would expect – just all of the flavour with hints and pricks of spice. Wonderful flavour mixture.

Sampled at the Friday night (Pre-Atlanta Cask Ale tasting) RB gathering at Twains 2006. Orange and hazy straw colored pour with a light white head. Crisp/fresh citrus under some kind of plasticy aroma (like kids toys), and a hint of standard saison under that. The flavor is citrus peal (lemon), sweet hints of malt and pepper (green bell and pepper corn). Nice bitter finish. Light medium body. This is not bad and the plastic does not distract too much from the overall enjoyment. As always, fantome has given us an odd offering.

Pours a cloudy dark yellow body that makes a thin head leaving a good lace. Funky, skunky aroma. Lightly sour flavor with a thin body and dry finish.

Pours a cloudy gold. There is an intense herbal aroma very similar to Deus (also a bit like a slighty green banana). There is a wild grape fruitiness in in this very dry beer.
