moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Very light sour presence in the aroma with some floral and spice scents as well--nothing overpowering anything else. Deep golden brown in color wiht a medium palate that has a light carbonation to it. Very, very earthy and dirty with lots of yeast and barnyard tastes. Not nearly as much chocolate or chilli pepper flavors as I expected. beerslayer (753), New Jersey, USA Jan 20, 2007 Wheres the Chocolate. Sweet, bitter and hop flavors. Finishes bland and not very good. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Jan 20, 2007 Hint of sourness in the aroma.Pours a cloudy copper with a long lasting white head.Get a musty yeast flavor.Thin to medium mouthfeel with a lot of yeast in the flavor. BBB63 (4198), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jan 16, 2007 Bottle and enjoyed in my Duval snifter: First pour is a slightly hazed golden hue topped by a fading frothy head but had very good lace on the glassware. The aroma was much more traditional than I figured which is a good thing. Lots of nice tart acidic fruit vapor, a bit of barnyard and earthy esters, a note of grassy and aromatic hops, mild pepper and cardamom, a just a tribute to cocoa powder.
Much like the nose the taste is much more standard Saison fare than a gimmick brew and a tasty one for sure with an initial hit of tart fruits and mild yeasty funk. Some herbal, grassy, and other earthiness in the middle before a MILD spiced (white pepper not really chili) and the aftertaste is the note of cocoa powder. The mouth feel is refreshing due to the tartness watering the palate and a spritzy carbonation level.
A very solid brew unlike the Strange Ghost disaster. This beer is a Saison at heart with just a smack of nontraditional flavors. Good job with this beer Dany! detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Jan 13, 2007 ]
Pours a hazy rust amber with about a quarter inch of off white foam. Not much head retention, but good lacing. Tart lemony funk aroma.
Tart fruity flavor, with cider, lemon, grass, strong tea, and a touch of ever so slight dry baker’s chocolate. Becomes quite acidic and a little bitter in the finish (which I really like). A slight burn in the aftertaste (from chili pepper?) that makes it feel a bit on the alcoholic side. Medium body, soft but spritzy carbonation. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jan 11, 2007 Lasting fizzy head. Dark orange. Light "Fantome" aroma, possibly apple but no trace of chocolate. Starts out plain and then comes a rush of sour spice and a long annoying chocolate flavour and finish. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Dec 28, 2006 Poured a amber color with good head and good lacing. Aroma was of citrus and pepper. Flavor was of citrus mostly nice pepper flavor in there. From the name i expected chocolate but got none. Okay beer but not great. SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Dec 21, 2006 In the 750 mL bottle from Beertopia. Pours a lovely dark and cloudy amber with a bountiful white head that goes the distance. A peppery aroma can be discerned, but you really can’t taste it. I get no chocolate in the aroma. However, this is a delicious beer. At first, it is mildly tart but slips into sweetness and follows up with a long dark chocolate finish to the palate. Complex at room temperature. I think this might be underrated. The fact that the chili pepper is mostly absent is a plus in my book.
