goozen (1061), Leiden, Netherlands Dec 14, 2008 Bottle at Kerstbierfestival, Essen: Darkbrown ale from this experimantal brewery, an spicy, flowery and herbel taste brew. pantanap (1322), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 13, 2008 750ml bottle thanks to footbalm.... pours a lively dark amber brown with a hefty light brown head.....aroma somewhat sour and metallic with a lot of mustiness and cobwebs to it.... flavor of sweet and sour, yeasty with a lot of mustiness and some discernable spices. nice creamy full mouthfeel. thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Dec 12, 2008 Pour is a hazy amber with a average white head. Aroma is some dark fruit with a bit of pepper and brown sugar. Flavor is more of a spice than anything. Some musty barnyard is left on the tounge after the swallow. Not much else shows up but i guess for a x-mas ale that is what they were going for. Still its pretty tasty and the 10% is nowhere to be found. WeeHeavySD (2940), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Dec 9, 2008 750, I bought at Obriens when I was there tonight. Ive been thinking about having this for a long time and went for it tonight. Bottle was a foamer while I was in the kitchen which was obnoxious. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is rich and malty with a bit of vinious quality. Taste is sweet with deep rich bitter chocolate flavors, and some rich burnt coffee. This is a big big beer, and its kinda crazy. Big strange and damn unique, another classic from Fantome. waolsen (1218), Littleton, Colorado, USA Dec 2, 2008 bottle. maple syrup pour. thin head disapates quickly. souar aroma of soy, apple, wood and spice. thin body. flavor is sharp sourness, caramel, woody, apple. disappointing overall. bradlyc77 (226), Sebastopol, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 Spicy nose with a nice dark color. Good balance of dry and sour, a good winter warmer belgian style. dkachur (2313), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Oct 31, 2008 Corked and capped 750 mL bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop. Pours a muddy purplish brown with a small head. Aroma full of choclate, cocoa, cherries, barnayrd and citrus.Taste is citrus, chocolate, cherry, yeast and some vegetal notes. Medium bodied. Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 20, 2008 Aged several years. Pours a dark and hazy cola brown color that glows bright reddish-amber when backlit. A frothy, beige colored head settles quickly to a wispy film, leaving soapy spots of lacing behind on the glass. Aromas include dehydrated dark fruits, primarily figs and dates, with a cola-like sweetness and a touch of sour orange peel and earthy spice. The signature, minty Fantôme yeast funk is there as well, but not as prominently as in some of their other beers. Flavors show quite a bit more sour, the yeast profile really showing its age. Hints of wintergreen and orange peel just don’t mesh that well with the dry, sour yeast and the flat molasses sweetness. I didn’t get any chocolate malts at all. The mouthfeel is dry, almost vinous, save for a delicate carbonation. This isn’t Fantôme’s best work, by any stretch. I’ll have to try a fresh bottle to see if it’s any better.
