Commercial Description:
A very dark and entirely unique holiday seasonal beer, at a whopping 10% alc. by volume. Reportedly spiced with honey, caramel, coriander, black pepper, and other secret ingredients. The alcohol content probably goes a long way toward explaining that very warm and satisfied feeling one finds on the very first sip. A rich, dark-flavored beer with lots of deep-roasted chocolate malt, but still fairly dry, with a hint of sourness at the core. It is very spicy, with some winter spruce flavor in the bargain. The wild yeast sourness also adds to its welcoming character.

The color was black. The head was creamy, light biege, and thin. The aroma was earthy, pepper, and caramel malt. The flavor earthy, sour, tart, and peppery. The alcohol is maxed very well. The palate was very carbonated. The finish was long lasting.

750 corked bottle with 086/477044 on cork. Can't crack that code. Dark amber colored and showing ruby red when held up to light. Short lived head and minimal lacing. Great aroma of fruity malt with a slight sour earthiness. Nice smooth medium body with alcohol masked better than Gene Simmons. Nice flavored ale with a slight bitterness. Malty and yeasty with a sweet and sour fruitiness. I'm impressed with this one. Very nice.

[bottle] Dark brown pour with a large brownish head. Aroma is tart and spicy. Flavor is a bit sour from the brett, little to no hops, but the bitterness builds over time.

No date. Pours dark brown with garnet highlights and no clarity; head is average, light tan, pillowy and frothy, with decent longevity and some tight lacing. Nose is very interesting brown ale-ish; nutty burnt caramel, strong Belgian chocolate, nutmeg, and just a hint of funky sourness. Flavor is more saison-ish but with some intriguing differences; burnt caramel notes with a sour tartness of overripe cherries followed by drier notes of light pepper, burnt toast, restrained roast, nutmeg, and a spruce note like the description points out. Palate is dry, medium, soft to lively, and velvety. Finishes dry with burnt chocolate, lingering sour notes, and the sprucey note. Similar to Jolly Pumpkin’s stout with dark, dry notes mixed with tart, sour notes. Certainly far from a typical saison, but extremely drinkable for the ABV and deceptively spicy. Certainly a nice beer for the season, and a refreshing new twist on the style.

on tap at Sergio’s. Dark hazy reddish pinkish brownish body with small white cap head. Yeasty aroma and flavor. The flavor is a bit more outgoing than the aroma, but not as funky as I was hoping (probably because it was on tap and fresh). Some lemony esters. Medium dry finish, medium bodied, and medium to high carbonation. Dangerously drinkable for abv.

Draft @ Capone’s: Poured a dark amber with not much head. The aroma was sweet malts, dark fruits and spice. The flavor was smooth, dark fruits, pepper, sweet malts and sugar. Overall, this one reminded me more of a Belgian Strong ale than a Saison, but excellent nonetheless.
