3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
750mL bottle, courtesy of julian, pours a cloudy opaque yellow with a light orange tint and a very small white head. Aroma is quite soapy and floral, with orange and lime zest. Flavour certainly brings out the zest, and loads of floral, soapy notes, finishing rather tart and soapy. The body is extraordinarily viscous, especially for a saison, almost chewy like. Certainly unique and unlike anything I’ve had before, let alone a saison.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Beer Mania (Brussels, Belgium)
Aroma: barnyard, basement aromas, citrus, and some herbal aromas
Appearance: dark orange to light red with a small white head. A lot of sediment.
Taste: not very sweet. Somewhat tart in that Fantome sort of way. There is some taste that I find hard to place and that I also don’t care much for...it may be okra. Reminds me of the Prof. Fritz Briem grut bier, so I identify the taste now as an herbal taste. A bit off-putting though.
Palate: light bodied and thin with a pretty average carbonation.
It’s a good beer, and I love Fantome, but this was a little underwhelming. I had a difficult time stomaching that okra taste.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Fantome-a-thon 2013. 1994 vintage.
Holy crap, very well carbonated and it’s twenty years old. Hazy dark orange witha task white head that falls fast.
Nose has lots of cork taint but it’s not all bad. More orange peel, some caramel, and some nuttiness.
Flavor is very strong on the cork followed by plenty of carmel, orange rind, and some lactic acid.
Medium body, a bit oily, and doesn’t retain co2 for very long.

9th January 2011
Hazy dark red - brown beer. Small bubbly tan head. Tangerine and cherry nose. Dry palate with mildly prickly carbonation. Sour tart tangerine, perhaps a dash of cherry. Spicy dry finish, ginger and a pinch of chilli. Unusual beer but a little too sour for me.

(Bottle) Pours hazy straw yellow with a small head. The aroma holds soft fruits, honey, dough, spices/coriander and bready malt. The flavour is light sweet to dry, medium acidic with almost no bitterness with notes of bread, dough, flowers, spices, citrus and honey. The mouthfeel is tart and fairly robust with light carbonation. Citrus, phenols and doughy bread on the finish. Medium bodied.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours cloudy orange with small white head. citrus, spices, not as sour as I expected and a lot less barn than I expected although both are there. I cannot believe this is 8% alcohol, I cannot detect any! I even had to double check the bottle as I thought it tasted about 4%. Easy drinker.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Full disclosure on this rating: had a sample sent to me by a good friend and I was skeptical it would hold up, but after hearing the hiss of the bottle, I think we are good to go. 1996 vintage sent courteousy of Stakem. Thanks Adam! Pours a murky brown color with a fingers worth of off white head. Nose is orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, and some light oxidation. Flavor starts out with a big rush of acidity and finishes with smooth malt and caramel. Mouthfeel is surprisingly delicate. Moderate acidity with good carbonation, and a lingering finish. Very nice experience, thank you Adam!

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
The summer version of the four seasonal Fantômes, with loose, unstable, off-white head and orange to peach blonde colour, misty. Aroma of vanilla, banana, strawberry ice cream, liquorice, wet straw, mint, sweat, orange peel and peach. Very fruity, very citrussy and very refreshing start, sweet like vanilla sugar, then a clean lemony acidity, caramel, honey, soft with fascinating spicy accents of aniseed, cloves and vanilla, in the end a bit of whisky-like warming alcohol, not wry in any way, some lactic acidity also showing up, possibly as a result of mild infection, dry with little hops. Very unusual like most of Fantôme’s beers but refreshing summer ale indeed.
