A steady pour into my Teku glass produces a two-finger thick, lightly brown tinged, creamed-amber colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown color that shows a hazy, dark amber / dark plum hue when held up to the light. The aroma is smoky, weirdly fruity, with perhaps a touch of fruitiness. Aromas of tamarind, perhaps a hint of brown sugar, a deeply earthy spice character, which melds well with a toasted, brown malt, whole grain character.

Very lightly sour, but pleasingly so, the tartness melds with a light roasted character and a touch of smokiness that lingers on the palate. The smokiness here almost seems a bit more than yeast would contribute, but it might just be from a phenolic yeast strain. The tartness contributes a filtered tamarind flavor, perhaps a touch of apple like notes, and an interesting, not quite herbal, not quite vegetal, perhaps rhubarb like note towards the finish. The beer is quite light bodied, especially for a beer of this strength, exceedingly quaffable. There is a nutty, toasted brown bread, and wholesomely sweet, brown grain breadiness to this beer that helps to ground this beer quite well. As the beer warms up it gets a touch more malt focused, still lightly tart, but perhaps a bit more balanced.

Extra sour? I am not too sure about that, even for a Fantôme, but it certainly has a nice tartness to it. This beer drinks exceedingly light for its labeled alcohol, in fact I wonder if it is really this strong. Definitely an interesting beer, it grew on me more as I worked my way through the bottle.

Hazy brown pour with a slight head. Thanks Ryan! Smoked peat nose. Really nice sour taste, lots of complex character with peat and smoke in the finish. Cool beer.

Bottle. Murky amber brown pour with a light beige head. Smoke, meat, and must on the aroma and taste. Not overly sour but slightly so.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is murky brown, almost black with a small cream-colored head and decent lacing. Big smoky, meat drippings, bacon, roasty, lightly tart and dark fruity aroma. Taste is big smoke, sour roasty, lightly tart, caramel, bready, and dark fruity witha lightly sour finish. Light body with soft carbonation. Pretty weird, but kind-of cool.

Bottle, big thanks to Matteo at the Pre-Zwanze. It pours dark brown with a quickly dissipating medium beige head. The nose is wood, toast, roasty, earth, tart lemon, green apple, vanilla and coconut. The taste is crisp, sweet-sour, Granny Smith apple, tangy lemon, caramel, musty, light smoke and brown bread with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. I really like the balance. Pretty damn tasty.

75cl bottle shared at Bruce’s. It pours a deep brown colour with a medium beige head. Aroma is smokey and chocolatey with ashes, red berries. Taste is sweet and acidic with peaches, cherries, charred oak and cocoa nibs. Mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. Overall, very good but would be even better without the smoke.
