COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Another masterful creation from brewer Dany Prignon has let life take its course in this brew to give us an honest, sour beer of mixed fermentation. The 2nd in a limited series of "Spéciales" from Brasserie Fantômes.

Thanks Nick for grabbing this for me at Hunger Mountain in August. $30 a bottle, 1 per person and cellared at 55F until December. Enjoyed with my girlfriend at 55 F in a snifter on her birthday.

A - Corked and capped bottle. The cork shot out too easily but thank goodness this bottle wasn’t a gusher. Poured a huge carbonation into the glass producing 4 fingers of pillowy and fluffy solid white head that faded to a single finger and sticking around. Amber orange hues with a slight murkiness. It’s a darker saison than I’m used to.

S - Smells of eggs, grapefruit peels, musky basement and burnt copper. Brown sugar and lemons as well.

T - Wow. The taste is peachy and a very nice balance of fruit juice and acidity like lemon spritz. The finish is lemons and pears with a crisp tart blossom that sticks around for far longer than you’d expect.

M - Huge carbonation. Every sip reveals an explosion of foam and bubbles and the body is medium and dry, tart, fruity and crisp like sparkling wine.

O - This is truly an extraordinary beer. It’s a perfect example of a classic saison with just the right amount of funk. What a fantastic beer. Simply incredible.

Bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Hazy, radient light orange, with a billowing three finger white head. Leaves a lot of sticky white lacing, and the head hangs around for the majority of the glass. A beautiful beer.

Smell: Funky yeast up front, followed by a big burst of grapefruit and citrus. Some melons come through on the nose as well. A light doughy smell, and some funk finish.

Taste: Follows the nose with a big burst of tropical fruits up from. Clean grapefruit and melons. Lots of funk, and a very night tartness. Think Vera Mae levels of tartness. Some bready sweetness. Finishes tart with fruit, and funk. A light oak on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Insanely drinkable. It is very hard to believe this is 10%, because it drinks like it is 5%. Incredibly juicy, with a night tartness. Finishes dry.

Overall: This beer met the hype for me. I thought the tartness was fantastic. Yes, this beer isn’t sour, but it taste phenomenal, so who cares.

In short: A fruity barnyard-funky amber ale with a sharp tartness. Excellent.
How: Bottle 750ml, capped and corked. Shared a few months after the release at post-HF Harvest 2012 party. Bottle I effortlessly acquired thanks to someone I should not name, thanks a million mister S.H.
The look: Cloudy amber-orange body topped by a medium off-white head.
In long: Opens with a loud pop. Nose is uber-rustic, signature funky-barnyard Fantôme aroma along with bright tart light-color fruits. Same goes with the taste, funky-barnyard Fantôme yeast, fresh tart light-color fruits (tangerines, tropical and exotic fruits), very sharp tartness. Lively carbonation. Simple yet complex at the same time. Don’t let its name fool you, this really isn’t a Sour Ale, tart it is, sour it is not. From my memory of all Fantôme beers I’ve had I’d say this one is somewhat similar to Fantôme La Gourmande. Truly excellent and a must for all Fantôme maniacs like me. This Fantôme Extra Sour is one of the best quality product I’ve purchased this past year, almost as well-made as those top quality camouflage pants I bought but never wear because they are so good that I can’t find them.

Bottle courtesy of craftycarl21- thanks!!! Bright orange pour with a sudsy white head that lasts nicely. Sourdough bread, farmy funk, and lactic acid lead to tangerine and tropical fruits. Medium body with fluffy carbonation. Super dry and crisp finish. Excellent!

750 ml bottle shared with oteyj! Pours a beautiful tangerine with lovely frothy white head. Aroma and flavor are marked by delightful crisp tart clementine, sweet grapefruit, touches of dry funk, and hints of nectar and apricot. Very effervescent and absurdly drinkable for 10%. Superb.

Walked into the Three Penny Taproom in Montpelier and ordered a bottle. And people say it's hard to acquire...! Thick, white head erupts from the hazy golden-orange body; massively over-carbed. Delicate aroma with bold funk, hay, sour yeast, dirty farmhouse fruit. Taste is sublime. Bright green apple tartness right off the bat, barnyard funk is restrained by soured strawberries. About the level of sourness I expected from a farmhouse brewery's undertaking of a "sour" beer. It's about as sour as Vera Mae, maybe slightly more. Smooth, crisp, immensely satisfying, and totally sessionable. I almost did a spit-take after noticing the 10% ABV, as it's nowhere to be found. Finish is reminiscent of a dry champagne. Waaaaaay too much carbonation overall, though. Get past the overly active body and this is a real winner. Hands down the best Fantome variant I've had, aside from one or two very special bottles of their Saison. Those are few and far between given the bottle variance, unfortunately, but then again so is this. Stellar.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy dark-ish golden with a huge white head. Aroma brings out tart fruity notes, especially apricot and peach, and loads of brett. Flavour brings out dry tart fruits, with peach especially, lemon peel, and moderate brett presence. Extremely high carbonation, but it is more or less fitting. Very dry and tart, with low funkiness and medium acidity. The best Fantome I’ve had.

A U.S. bottle through Shelton Brothers, courtesy of Greg and Darrell at Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont. Cloudy gilden yellow color, large white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dusty lemons and subtle pineapple. Taste is funky citrus, sourdough bread dough, white pepper. Hi carbonation goes without saying. Very nice.

750mL at CK shared with tastybeer, MrChopin, craftycarl21, and biggirlpanties. Pours with no typical Fantome gush. Pours a full haze, glowing peach orange. Larger white head. Overcarbonated as expected. Nose is sweaty, pretty soft funk, some thick vanilla, mango sticky rice, sharp curaçao. Fresh linen. Taste is mega refreshing, super aerated and very minerally with small saltwater. Actually not really sour. Not too lactic and no acetic. More just orange and pineapple juice with small hints of butter and wheat in the backend. Richer finish. More like JP Bam Biere.
