2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
It’s not that Fantôme does not brew many novelties, but they’re mostly hard to find in Canada. And the brewery still holds a special place in the anticipated pleasant surprises department, so it’s always a thrill to try a new one. Here, we’re facing a ridiculously spicy (yeah, ridiculous is the word), generously aromatic and perfumey nose with strong orange and a whole spice rack. How can I smell basil in such a yeast ale? Not necessarily all that pleasant, but as often, unexpected and what saves it has got to be the freshness. It ain’t refreshing, but it feels fresh and thus remains respectable, not just a bunch of aromas with no foundation. The smooth body and its gentle carbonation are suitable. The slightly milky acidity attempts at being refreshing. If only its nose were not so impossible to comprehend, this could actually be pleasant, but alas, they tried magic and new tricks don’t work all the time.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Poured a deep clear orangey color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of sour and tart notes with some distinctive citrus notes. Taste is also a well balance mix between some tart and sour notes with some citrusy hops with limited bitterness. Full body with good carbonation and no discernable alcohol. Easily drinkable and very funky while being different form any other beer I tasted before.
