Commercial Description:
This is a delicious, textural, and fizzy county ale, bright gold colour, citric and sour, reminiscent of a good champagne or lambic but in a class all its own.
Fantôme – Golden ale, 8% alc. by volume, with a wonderfully musty and characterful aroma. There are many drinkers out there who believe this is the “Nectar of the Gods.” Certainly no other brewer makes beer like this, in Belgium or anywhere. How many beers of 8% plus offer such fresh fruitiness? A solid Belgian saison beer at its base, with an unusual overlay of fruitiness.

Bottle. Hazy golden colour with a huge mostly lasting white creamy head. Heavy aroma and taste of hops, fruits and citrus. Well balanced.

Bottle from trappist glass. Poured hazy orange color with a minimal frothy white head that diminished quickly with fair lacing. Moderate yeasty sour tart fruit aroma. Light to medium body. Medium sour citrus flavor with a medium sour spicy finish of moderate duration.

Bottle. Golden pour with an off white head. Aroma was REALLY funky, there was some honey in there but for the most part it was cobwebs and cheese. There had to be some sort of infection to this bottle, so it wil be one I’ll have to come back to. Flavor was funky, brett some light malt and honey. Sour light body with a spicy finish.

Bottle: Clear gold in color with a white head. Aroma, very funky lemon, and light fruits, but the funk was just too much. Flavor, green apple lemon and a whole ton of funk. I don’t know if this bottle was a bit skunked or what, but it was too much for me, and I usally enjoy the occasional funky beer.

Bottle at the brewery (brillaint place), a slight haze to the golden colour with a white frothy head. A strong hop aroma of apple and pears. Very ciderish at the front of the mouth, but smooth and more malty in the finish. Different.

Pours a hazy pale yellow color with lots of bubbly fizz. Aroma lemon and dough. Flavor is very sour and citrusy, specifically lemon and grapefruit. Overall, light and enjoyable but a tad too sour.

Bottle, generously provided by Terdferguson. Good aroma, I guess, Spiced. Clove, coriander, lemon, banana. Got that scent I can only dscribe as a burnt out flourescent light ballast as it warmed. Hazed golden orange color, Big head & good lace. Bitter sour flavor. I got an initial sweetness that was quickly buried by the sour funk. Like aroma with some grapefruit thrown in. Man the sour funk just grows as it warms. Medium body, lite smooth creamy mouthfeel, Funky sour finish. When cold the spice was kind of nice, as it warmed the funk just killed me, but this is what saison people tell me it’s all about. I don’t know how you do it.

A very good saison. Some traditional and funky elements to it. Mike got a bottle for my birthday at Hopleaf to split. Some lemon, spice, and yeast on the nose, with lemon, white pepper, corriander, banana, honey, grapefruit, and something else spicey that I couldn’t put my finger on. Some good funky flavor, which I attribute to the yeast, as it wasn’t like the cheese or fish flavors of a geuze, but still different and enjoyable.
