Commercial Description:
This is a delicious, textural, and fizzy county ale, bright gold colour, citric and sour, reminiscent of a good champagne or lambic but in a class all its own.
Fantôme – Golden ale, 8% alc. by volume, with a wonderfully musty and characterful aroma. There are many drinkers out there who believe this is the “Nectar of the Gods.” Certainly no other brewer makes beer like this, in Belgium or anywhere. How many beers of 8% plus offer such fresh fruitiness? A solid Belgian saison beer at its base, with an unusual overlay of fruitiness.

Pours with a thin head. Cloudy off-orange color. Aroma is earthy, yeasty, rich with bananna esters, and just a little bit dry. Body is malty and very, very smooth. Flavors of yeast, hops, and subtle dry spices with earthiness in a great finish. Well done.

interesting beer. it began with some champagne like qualities, crisp and bubbly. the flavor grows as it warms, the beer begins with a bitterness that covers the fruit flavors which develop later

As a lot of Fantome beers this one really wanted to get out of the bottle, so the cork blew off. An unclear yellow beer with particles of yeast floating around and with a huge white head with small spot of spices. The aroma is sweet with notes of spices especially cinnamon, but also with fruity notes of lemon. The flavor is sweet with a slight acidic lemony background and notes of spices, citrus, and hops giving it a slightly bitter end, where the alcohol also makes its presence known by leaving You with a warmth in the mouth, but the alcohol is well hidden. The mouthfeel is very smooth.

This poured with a serious amount of head, filling a solid third of the glass. The color is a hazzy golden with a tint of orange. From about a foot away it smells grassy and slightly sweet. Closer inspection shows its much more bitter citrus and a bit of wheat as well. The flavor is nicely bitter at first, then it shifts over to a more fruity taste, lemon, orange, pineapple, all nicely blended. Leaves the mouth with a sweeter malty taste, and not a presence of alcohol in it.

Having worked through both a bottle cap and a cork to get to the ale, It poured a hazy yellow/gold with a thin fizzy head that dissipated to a narrow halo around the glass. The aroma was of sour fruits, a bit of citric, pineapple, apricot, and the like. The sourness of the drink reminded me of a gueuze, but not quite so harsh. It’s quite fruity, again with the pineapple and lime and grapefruit, and also contained some spiciness. This ends with a lindering tart aftertaste. Good drink.

I have had several from this noteworthy brewer, but recently discovered I had never rated the original -- what a treat to discover belatedly! Head gushed slightly upon pulling the cork -- when poured, cloudy straw body was topped by a big white foam that dissipated to a small creamy one. Aroma is moderately sweet and invitingly fruity (pineapple, strawberry, kiwi, some melon, apricot, light banana). Taste is moderately sweet, fruity (melon, strawberry, kiwi), light pepper. The second half of the bottle reveals a bit of fruity sourness not previously present. Watery light-medium body conceals the relatively high alcohol content, light acidity. I almost can see this as a soda -- not cloying, but an undeniable fruity sweetness that is tremendous. I truly enjoyed the hour plus that it took to consume the bottle, a treasured experience I look forward to repeating. With the Fantomes I have tried so far, the original beats all others hands down.

Shared a big bottle with my roommates. Damn fine stuff. Pours out a hazy golden yellow with a big white head. Fantastic funky barnyard aroma. Complex flavours yeasty, a little sour and fruity. Delicious,

Shared big bottle at Monks in Philly. Was a little to sour for my liking. Had a light aroma and texture. I keep thinking grass on a farm for some reason. I’m sure this is a knock out beer for some people but this one just didn’t click for me.
