A tasty bitter, with more malty character than most. The malt is dry and autumnal, as well as fruity and a good helping of hops gives this a good balance. Clean, dry finish. An excellent, easy drinking bitter. Some of the Maldon beers appear as "Farmers Ales", which this was. Cask, Willoughby Arms, Little Bytham, Lincolnshire.

Gravity at the Blue Boar, Maldon. After a visit to the Battle of Maldon site - "grim gušplega, ęr we gofol syllon" - we settle down to a couple of drinks in the tap room of the Blue Boar Hotel. This reddish autumnal bitter with roasty, malty flavours hinting of an Irish Red or an Old Ale, is our favourite. Damp, sweet, oaky and with licorice hints, it finishes with a fresh and fragrant dustiness. A spanking ale served in excellent condition.
