Bottle from Birroteca La Tana del Luppolo, Bologna, Feb 2011 consumed March 8th 2011 There was a very impressive German section of beers within this great little shop. Pours amber with a slim white head, good clarity, soft in mouth the alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering, malty touch of strength, nice beer. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Coppery colored with little yellow head. Nutty aroma with sweet caramel and fruits, thin grassy hops here as well. Medium bodied. Flavor is also nicely nutty and fruity, sweetness and fine grassy hops here as well, grass lasts in aftertaste. Nicely balanced and clear doppelbock.

Bottle. Reddish bronze beer with a strongish head. The aroma is malty and slightly rich, and the flavour is very bitter and peppery with a malty and sweetly roasted body. Overall a fairly average strongly malty and bitter beer.

Draft, I think we got the last of the wooden barrel. Lovely, very warm copper color with a thick and stable head. Aroma is...strong, sweet, grainy. The palate is very soft and easy going. The flavors are balanced. Mainly big and malty and sweet, with fruity undertones, finishing clean and crisp at first. Gets more cloying towards the end of the glass. The alcohol is surprisingly well-disguised and smooth and feel the heat mostly in my head. Makes me sleepy. Overall unspectacular as far as doppelbocks are concerned, it has more of a pale bock spirit.

Bottle at home. Clear amber pour, thin white head. Aroma of swamp and wet dog, combined with some faint German hops and sweet malts. Flavor is swampy, some bitter hops with spices and a quite unpleasant yeasty malty swamp flavor. Not my kind of brew. And also not something I would call a doppelbock.

From the barrel. Copper, bright. Warming malts, somewhat sticky-caramelly aroma. Sweet, caramelly taste with nutty accents. Has a fairly healthy bitterness to balance, with maybe some alcohol coming in late. Not bad doppelbock.

It’s a light amber to golden beer with a quickly receding, loose, off white head. The initial impression of the nose is of a strong lager style; there’s a rich maltiness but it’s not exactly rounded or complex. And like a lager there’s a bit of bread and sweat here. The hops give off an aroma of aged oranges and dried lemons. In the mouth there’s a musty honeyed sweetness that gives the bready-heavy malts and old hops a bit of a backbone, though it does get a tad over the top as the beer warms. And, indeed, as the temperature rises the alcohol comes out, but it has a nice zing to it. The mouth feel is medium with a definite stickiness; the carbonation is likewise medium. The finish returns to the yeast/bread and lager sweetness, though right at the end there’s a bit of a soapy note. It’s basically like a strong, malty pilsener - and though it’s drinkable, it’s not very interesting.

500ml bottle! Into the glass pours a dark amber-colored beer that is losing its head quickly. Smells strong roasted malt. Starts also very roasted malt, subtle alcoholic with a strong licorice undertone. The aftertaste is roasty, bitter coffee and decent alcoholic. The further course is a little nutty, but always remains strong roasted malt!
