Bottle. Clear, deep orange body with a medium, frothy white head. Light raisin and white grape aroma along with some cracker and light toast. Flavor highlights the raisin/grape character and a little caramel peeks through. Light, floral noble hop presence. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fairly balanced malt/bitterness profile. Lingering malt flavors. Worth dragging back in my suitcase!

Brown half litre bottle, best before 2nd Jun 09. Poured into half litre ’Berliner Kindl’ glass and drank in Jan 09. This review was done while eating brown bread and a Smoked German Salami salad. Because of this breweries history (I have visited twice) I assumed this would be a real smokey special with loads of hidden strenght. That was not the case, there was more smokiness in my salami then in the beer! The beer poured a clear dark amber with very little head, even after a vigorous pour. No aroma worth mentioning when the beer is first poured and cold. As it warms a Peaty (like some Whiskies) aroma does appear, a warming open fire sort of thing. It is however, too little, too late. The alcohol is evident in the mouthfeel and taste. A little smokiness arrives in the aftertaste and a slight warming of the throat followed each mouthful (it isn’t a sipping beer). I feel this is a half and half compromise between a Rauch and Doppelbock, with the Doppelbock coming out on top, but only just. Having said that, I enjoyed the beer, I just wish I could have scored it higher in some of the other review areas.

Tranquillity (1338) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - MAR 10, 2012
Draught, cafe brecht. Dark gold body, small white head. Aroma malty, but rather weak. The taste is too much of alcohol, and the finish is weak but very bitter.

Copper colour, hazy, minimal head. Slight musty aroma, strong hints of booze, a bit hoppy. Tasted charcol and roasted malts. All flavours were slightly drowned out by the booze, it was a bit too much. Not smooth but not fizzy. Ok to have tried but won’t seek out again.

500 ml bottle. From bierzwerg.de.
Clear copper colour with small off-white head. Heavy bready malty aroma with some mild medical notes. Malt, bread, hops, some sweetness and metal in flavour. Definitely not my favourite.

50cl bottle. Poured dark copper with a white head. Aroma is sweet caramel with some bread as well as buttery notes. Flavor is very similar with some dark fruity notes towards finish. Light alcohol coming through, but not disturbingly. On the sweeter side.

Test vom 24.2.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche

fiulijn (10421) - Como, ITALY - JUN 25, 2011
Bottle from Markgrafen Bamberg
Light amber color, copper, with medium sized creamy head. The aroma seems to be anonymous, but at some point it develops some delicate hop notes, and malt. Medium body strength, but also a bit of an oily mouthfeel, which is not desired; light malt flavor, with very light cereals touch, although the real quality here is the strong bitterness supported by a hop with some qualities. It doesn’t have enough depth, complexity; what if they threw a handful of smoked malt in?
Decent.
