Being in the town of ridiculously over-the-top beers made according to arcane and bizarre traditions, I didn’t expect to find a really good pilsener. But this is just a beautiful, soft, round, honeyish, then herbally bitter pils that might as well have come from the czech republic, if not for the green tinge in the colour that good german pilseners have.

Bottled. A clear deep golden beer with a small and fast disappearing white head. Flowery hoppy nose with some malt. very dry with a good hopping and medium to high bitterness. Maybe the body is too much thin, but it doesn’t matter to me. Another good beer from Bamberg.

Germany has a real beer culture, and Germans like to get an early start. It was not uncommon for me to be returning from an early morning walk after breakfast, to find the pub at Fassla packed with locals at 10am! When in Bamberg! I got pretty thirsty after a brisk walk, and found myself enjoying a few 1/2 liters of this beer, and felt no guilt drinking beer before Noon. Fassla Pils is a very well done, very balanced drinkable Pils with good hop and malt character, the type of beer you will want to have a few of.
Fassla Pils pours to a beautiful, bright, golden color with a nice, bright, white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose is pleasing with crisp pilsner malt aroma, paired with grassy/herbal hop aromas. The palate is crisp with good pilsner malt flavor, on a very smooth and round body. Fassla Pils finishes with more crisp and grainy pale malt flavors up front, the ends with a grassy/herbal bitterness that balances out the malt character of this beer.
This is a tasty, smooth, very drinkable German Pils. A nice beer to enjoy a few liters of in the pub at Fassla, or a good beer to match up with a hearty Franconia meal in the rustic, wooden panel, pine table topped restaurant. Nothing over the top here, the type of beer just ideal for drinking more so than anything else. I really enjoyed this one, and this and their lager bier were the beers I started and ended my day with. It was hard not to, as all I had to do was literally walk down a flight of stairs from the second floor hotel, and I was in the pub and ready for a fresh draught of beer. If you ever find yourself in Bamberg, Fassla is well worth a visit. Its central location is really great, and it does not hurt that Brauerei Spezial is located directly across the street for when you crave a rauchbier.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Draught at Luitpold Cafe, Bamberg, Germany. Poured a golden colour with a two-finger white foamy head that collapsed quickly but laced OK. Moderate carbonation with small bubbles forming trails. Aroma of malt and earthy hops. Taste of sweet malt fading to a slight hops bitterness. Light body. Finish a bit sour. Ordinary.
