Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thick orange head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of hops and caramel, and the flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of grapefruit, leading to a dry bitter end. Nice thick body.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2007 Bottle (660ml - 2005 bottle). Shared with biegaman and viggo, viggo’s bottle. Hazy orange, decent off-white foamy/creamy head. Odd aroma - alcohol, oak, vanilla, tangerine, mild solids, fruits and perfumey hops. Smooth flavour, very juicy and buttery (in a good way) - lovely sweet citrus finish. Solid body, sweet, boozy and smooth as all hell. Great barley wine.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 mgermani (972) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 17, 2006
Aroma of apples & berries, and present alcohol. Also something I can’t quite place... plums? Pours a gorgeous strawberry amber with a small amount of foam which forms a ring very quickly. Citrus in the hops (Cascade?) balanced at first by warming alcohol but gradually bittered as the sweetness wears off. A real treat, but not for everyday.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 23, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 10, 2007 Any first impressions?
-A veil of foam settles atop the reddish amber.
-Brown sugar sitting on frail wood, and fruit and vegetables abound in the simplistic aroma.
-A fruity syrup sometimes reaches corn, as oak and alcohol induce dryness.
-The body is healthy, not bulky, and is loosely carbonated.
What if you dig deeper?
-Citrusy hops clumsily join the complacent flavors.
-I don’t feel like the malt bill fits these particular bourbon barrels; cohesion is lost.
-The finish brings back alcohol, weak hops, and greenness.
-Not a bad barley wine as it were, but the wine barrel 2004 vintage I had tasted at the RBSG in Montreal last year was far superior. I just don’t think this barrel helped the beer at all.
Bottle; 2005 vintage.

strong aroma of candy, lemon, rhubarb, apple. Great! Pours a copper brown, weak head. Sour lemon, chocolate notes, alcohol well hidden. A great beer that deserves more attention.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 CapFlu (4023) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 6, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 20, 2007 (650ml bottle) Courtesy of Oakes. Pours a frothy yellow dissipating head with a dark, dark orange body. Nose of fresh figs, pool water (chlorine?), petuli oil and nail polish. The flavour is ripe with strong prunes, oily flowers, sour bitches and malted-macho-mustachioed barley-whores. E for Excellent. Highly compatible with cheese and/or/during sex!

Red coper ale with a thick light moka head. Very fruity and pungeant aroma, with caramel and plums and strong alcohol. In mouth, warming alcohol over sweet candy sugar, vinous notes and intense C-hops. Rich and smooth. Thanks to Capflu!!!
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ernest (5646) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 2, 2006
RBSG 2005.
Body is medium amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel), moderately hoppy (resin), with notes of sherry and wood.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter.
Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Somewhat brutish with hops in the finish, and overall not really my kinda barleywine.
