Alt means "old" in German and this refers to the old method of brewing in Germany; i.e. top-fermented ales. Alt Bier is an ale and is still the local specialty in and around Dusseldorf. Deep copper in color with a fresh hop aroma, this beer has an especially clean maltiness with a robust punch of hop bitterness. Smooth, balanced and dangerously drinkable.

Enjoyable. Nice malt flavor with decent hop punch. No citrus flavors with these hops. Different flavor profile than apa or ipa but nice all the same, not as bold.

This one poured a straight amber color with a white head. Aroma was of light grassy hops, toast and caramel. Flavor was sticky and sweet, some biscuits with light hop bitterness. Meh.

Tap at Fat Heads - North Olmstead. Deep amber pour. The nose is softly earthy with a kiss of light noble hops. Softly sweet with a fresh sweet malty character. Light noble hops with a soft fresh herbal hoppiness. Very clean and fresh with a very crisp, firm bitterness. Well-balanced.

On tap at Fat Heads in Cleveland. Pours a pretty deep copper with a thin head and aromas of caramel and herbal hops. Flavor has a strangely abrasive hops presence that gains steam and buries the malt as it develops on the palate.

Growler brought back by a friend. Pours a clear reddish copper with a huge beige head. Caramel malt nose with a noble hop balance. Flavor also begins with caramel and has a bitter earthy hop finish that was a tad more aggressive than I expected based on the nose.

Matt has a way with German styles, and he nailed this one. Clear deep amber pour, thick head with nice lacing. Toasty/malty aromas with some green hop aroma. Smooth flavor, the malt shines and with a big bitterness at the back end balancing it out. Very good stuff that I could drink lots of.
