Snifter at Pies & Pints at Easton on 5/6/15. Dark brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, vanilla and light chocolate. Malty flavor with bourbon, caramel, vanilla and chocolate before a semi-roasty finish. Not bad by any means, but as good as Battle Axe is, it doesnít stand up to the barrel very well.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft to taster. Looks good; a very cloudy dark brown with foamy light beige head. Smells of toffee, coffee, oak, and a bit of dark fruit. Tastes like it smells, but less balanced, with a medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Still, enjoyable.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft. Poured a black color with an average brown creamy head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted chocolate malt, dark fruit and bourbon aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. A smooth standout complex brew.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at OCBA Holiday Craft Beer Extravaganza. Dark beer with a sticky thin beige head. Big buttery bourbon barrel nose. The bourbon barrel is very present on the first sip. Lots of oak, vanilla, dried fruit, chocolate, and caramel flavors mixed with the dominant barrel. Good use of a barrel to add to an already good beer.

Draft at MadTree Birthday Bash. Pours a deep coffee brown with a small creamy beige head. Aroma of vanilla, milk chocolate, toffee, dark and dried fruits (dates, figs, raisins), and some coffee roast. The flavor follows the same lines, also leaning more toward the sweet notes than the malty. The booze is really subtle here. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, sweet, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice barrel treatment.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft sample at Big Beers and Barley wines Dayton. Pours a clear dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor had moderate roast, dark fruits, nice barrel treatment with wood and the spirit, hints of chocolate and coffee and a touch of caramel. Creamy mouthfeel with medium body. The barrel smoothed this out. Not as big and bold as some of my favorites, but a solid beer nonetheless.
