On tap at the Brewpub with the Ohio gang. Dark brown color with a medium tan head. The aroma is malty with some chocolate in the background. Thin-bodied with flavors of toasted malt, chocolate and mild hops. The finish is sweet chocolate malt up front with a light hops aftertaste.

Dark black appearance, somewhat transparent in color. Creamy body with nice roasted blabbed with a medium body. Best swartzbier I have had.

Draft at Libertyís, served in a taster goblet. Pours a cloudy coffee brown with a moderate beige head that settles into a thick ring and thin film while lacing the glass. Notes of toasted and chocolate malts, cola, earth, tobacco, and nuts. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry, toasty, earthy mouthfeel. Good schwarzbier.

The cask special at the local bar seemed much more appealing than some of the offerings from further afield. While it offers some promise it comes across in the end as a subpar offering from a brewer who is capable of much more. I would probably fall back on their hoppier beers if I were to hit up the brewpub any time soon.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base swirls around the glass with little effort. Wispy tan head and slick sheer legs add some depth. Smoky malts are true to character although a bit mellow with chocolately undertones providing most of the depth.

Flavor / Palate - Smoke, black licorice, and a dry feel give this a robust profile. It seen begins to peter out though. Without any staying power it manages to be a solid session draft and nothing more. Ultimately it falls in the middle of the pack. I would rather go with Fat Headís more hoppy offerings if I had another option as this one pales in comparison to other releases. Even so you canít go wrong with a little taster to make up your own mind.

Draft at mad Mex on McKnight Road in Pittsburgh. Just OK - lacks anything to make it great. I expected more and got less.

On tap at Fat Heads Portland - Pour dark brown with a white head. The aroma has roasty malt, smoothness, chocolate and caramel. It has a medium smooth body with soft carbonation. The flavor has caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted malt and some nuttiness. The finish is nutty and has some earthy hops. This was okay. Seemed as much of a brown ale as it did a schwartzbier.

Aroma: Very faint hints of nutty malts. Appearance: Dark brown with rich, tan head. Taste: Light sweetness with hints of sourness at edges. Palate: Light body, slick texture, soft carbonation, soft finish. Overall: Not disappointing, but a bit too sweet and light for my finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap, from ratings backlog. Pours clear deep red hazel, medium tan head, dissipates quickly, good lacing. Aroma is roast, grain. Flavor is medium sweet, little bitterness, molasses notes. Medium body, high carbonation. Not really a lot going on here. Unfortunate.
