COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark ruby brown color with complex flavors reminiscent of dried fruits. The sweet hints of raisin, fig, and plum are accentuated with rock candy sugar then warmed away by the strength of the dry finish due to its alcoholic strength. This magical brew will warm your spirit. 24 IBU

on tap at FH 20Apr2012, a more pleasing beer than the others, big on flavor and booze, though not overpowering.. the dark fruits are here, but difficult for me to pick one out of the flavor, smooth drinking and better as it warms a bit.

Poured a medium brown color with a good off-white head. Bit of a reddish hue to the beer. The nose brought forward quite a bit of dark fruits plus some caramel and a good amount of clove. General yeastiness there as well. The taste consisted of more clove plus some dates and figs. Light malt sweetness came through as well, complementing the spice. Mouthfeel was nice and full with good, low-level carbonation. Drinkability was quite good. A pretty impressive brew. Served in a tulip for around $5.50. The Sorcerer is a nice looking brew. It’s like some kind of supernatural forces are at work here. The beer isn’t cloudy – it’s mostly clear copper with some gold edges. Not as dark as some Belgians, but decent looking, especially with regards to the nice head retention & lace. The nose is decisively Belgian – driven by a relatively expressive Belgian yeast strain and notes of dark fruit from the malt. There’s an abundance of fig, raisin, and Belgian candy sugar. I get a touch of bubblegum from the yeast. There could be a bit more distinction, as this smells much like other American attempts at the style. Still pleasant. As is the taste – my taste buds are greeted by dark fruit, brown sugar and even a hint of plum, cherry and chocolate. The beer comes across as both sweet and tangy, and, unfortunately, the booze is very evident. In surmising how I feel, I would say this beer is just a bit too big for its shoes. A bit less booze or more expressive flavors would work much better for me. The mouthfeel is back to an excellent score with nice carbonation enhancing the medium body. While the booze is evident, the beer feels good in my mouth. I liked this a bit more than some other Belgian offerings from Fat Heads, but, again, I find myself feeling like this beer isn’t quite delicate enough to hang with anything overseas or even the best of what America is offering. While the flavors work, I find the best Belgians have a: 1 (base) + 1 (yeast) = 3 equation going on. Here, we’re stuck at 2. A: Pours a dark amber color with a small off white foam head with no real lacing. S: As it warms there are some scents of caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit and alcohol. T: A nice amount of sweet brown candified sugar and caramel hit the palate first. The dark fruit esters are more prevalent on the back end. There is a slight alcohol taste as well, but it more of a sherry or port wine alcohol taste. M: A nice medium body with sufficient carbonation. Leaves a nice candy flavor on the palate. Heavily sweetened aroma with caramel and tropical orange along w/ candi-sugar and some booziness from the high ABV. Sweet tasting as I pick up caramel and a hint of chocolate as well as some plush fruits and there’s a slight bready dryness as well. Carbonation leads to a crisp finish of a balanced, medium-bodied ale that while somewhat simplistic for style is very enjoyable to sip and the ABV stay hidden, making for a dangerous session beer. Lots of tiny bubbles are racing up to a thick, khaki colored head. The head slowly falls to a dusting that leaves some spots of lacing. Its aroma is sweet and phenolic. I smell plum, figs, raisins, trail mix, spice, and candy. It kind of reminds me of a Chinese plum BBQ sauce. I taste sweet plum, red apple, sweet rolls, pepper, Dr. Pepper, and a hint of brandy. Tastefully phenolic. The flavors are not as complex as the aromas, but both are very well balanced. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. It is a little bitter for style. It has a dry finish that is pleasant. Highly drinkable, but beware it does pack a punch. I’m feeling it after only a 10 oz pour. F.T. Id love to have this beer with a little aging to it. I’m thinking with little time for the flavors to marry this brew would rival any Belgian offering. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 12-30-2010 22:22:48 -- Report Abuse id: 1356323

(Poured from a growler) This beer starts with an aroma of sugar, light fruits, and Belgian yeasts. It pours a clear reddish amber, with a full white head. This beer has a very sweet flavor, with the alcohol very well hidden. Nice long finish of light fruits and sugar. This is an impressive beer, and I hope to see it bottled soon.

Aroma: Bandy and Melon with hints of bubblegum and raisin. Appearance: Cloudy amber with no head. Taste: Heavy sweetness with balanced, sour finish. Palate: Full body, thick texture, fizzy carbonation, loooong finish. Overall: A bit too sweet for me, but a well crafted brew that I would have again.

A decent Belgian ale. My big problem with this beer was the lack of carbonation. Aromwas decent. Plum, raisin and a hint of yeast. Pour was a flat dark swirling brown with no bubbles or head. Taste was very sweet. The plum and raisin mix with heavy brown sugar and candi sugar flavors. The lack of carbonation makes the beer a bit boring and seem stale. With carbonation this beer would score a lot higher

On tap at Fat Heads in Pittsburgh. Pour is a fairly nondescript brown with a little bit of tan head and aromas of malty brown sugar. Flavors are similar... lots of brown sugar and an odd light fruit (pears?) that gives way to a bit of pit fruit darkness. I really liked this one.

Sampled on draft at the Pittsburgh location this beer poured a dark brown color with a small beige head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was candied fruits, sugar, caramel and tangy malts. The flavor was a bit tart with sugar, candied cherries and pears, caramel, nut, yeast and licorice notes. The finish was long and sugary with lingering ripe fruits. Thick and full bodied. There was an odd presence that reminded me of the Unibroue house yeast character. Quite nice.
