On draft (guest)
Swinging by Lizardville to see what was on I discovered this. Knowing that Fat Heads seldom disappoints I ordered a pint right away. Even at $6.50 it was worth the price if for no other reason than the exceptionally generous pour. In fact it was so much I barely had room for a small sample afterwards.
Aroma and appearance - The thick legs crawled like sweat down someone’s forehead on a steamy summer afternoon. Dense cocoa colored head graced the top of an inky black base which looked like melted candle wax in the glass. Heavy black coffee, anise, smoke, malt, and chocolate were heavy on the senses. In the background was the smell of an automotive pit after a recent oil change.
Flavor and palate - Chewy chocolate, coffee, anise, and blackberries simmer on the tongue. Residual hops bring this an additional layer of complexity to provide even more bang for the buck. The mildly smoky finish was thick like the back alley of a club. Overall it feels like eating a Mars Bar which melted on the dash of a car during a sunny day. The alcohol is evident but well balanced. Once again Matt Cole has come through with a great beer.

8 oz from MrBunn. Pours dark like evil. Almost no foam. Funky coffee leather, earth mix... Some prunes, and ample chocolate. Full mouthfeel, great steady palate. A little smoke and tang at the end. Full on in terms of punch, and I’m surprised that it’s only 9.1% Good stuff.

Tap sample. Poured a black color with a large frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, fruit and alcohol aroma. Heavy bittersweet roasted chocolate malt flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

Happy day with a growler of Stone Age! I poured it a little warmer than I thought and got a lot of foam, but that’s not all bad. The aromas match the body-dark and creamy. Chocolate, dark fruit and a healthy dose of cream dominate the palate with occasional side currents of peat or bitter coffee grounds that blend in nicely. Mouthfeel and palate development are both full and good. Anticipation was high for this and Fatheads delivered another winner! This beer will win gold medals.

Sample at the brewpub. This beer pours solid black with a medium tan head that dissipates slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate and malt. Rich body with flavors of dark chocolate, bitter coffee, malt and dark fruits. The finish is sweet roasted malt with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Very good overall.

black with large tan head. served far too cold. nose of chocolate and some roasted malt. low bitterness before the above flavors come through, not remarkably flavorful, but pleasant, with some citrus hops, but subdued. low residual sweetness and nice alcoholic depth. a subtle but well version made of the style

This poured a very dark brown almost black with a tan head. Aroma was nice dark roasted malts, and some bittersweet chocolate too. Flavor was very light soy sauce, a good amount of bittering hops and roast and some dark chocolate. Average Impy but nothing special.

Aroma: Light chocolate, but it’s faint and distant.
Appearance: Black with a thick, tan head.
Taste: Medium sweetness, with a light bitterness in the finish. Really tasty.
Palate: Full body, average carbonation, creamy texture, long finish.
Overall: It’s nice, but I’m not so blown away that I’d stock this regularly over something else. It’s a really well developed and thought out beer, though, and very well balanced.
