4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 dcschiller (2033) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - JAN 21, 2013On draught at Fate. I’m going to be the dissenting voice on this. Pours near black and has massive amounts of savory smoke. The taste follows suit with more smoke and then more. I really look forward to the next time I smoke a brisket because this is the beer I’ll go with. If you don’t like smoke, you won’t like this. This beer is aggressive.

A lot of breweries make a smoked porter... but I have not found one that is as good as the one at Fate Brewing Company. They use some ridiculous wood to smoke this beer, and it smells AND tastes like you are puffing on a cigar. Granted, that is a unique flavor and one that takes some getting used to. But imagine drinking a Highland single malt. Those are smooth, and easy to drink. But then imagine drinking an Islay single malt. Unless your palate is used to that flavor, you would spit it out and think it was gross. Same thing with a smoked porter. It takes a certain palate to appreciate a smokey flavor in a beer. Stone makes a smoked porter, but the Fate blows the Stone out of the water! Well done, Fate!
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 savnac (2135) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - JAN 25, 2013
Draft @ Fate. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of smoked wood, chocolate, roasted malt and some vanilla. Flavor is rich chocolate, ashy wood and some caramel. Medium to full body with a smooth feel. Very nice smoked porter, rich and smoky.

On tap at the brewery. Comes dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of smoke and roasted malt. Taste is smoke, wood, roasted malt, and some hops. OK.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 JPDurden24 (1118) - Chandler, Arizona, USA - NOV 26, 2012
At the brewery, dark brown, almost black pour with lots of smoke and wood. As is the case with many smoke beers, too much smoke. Not for me.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 daknole (7211) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - NOV 21, 2012
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2012 Dark brown pour. Light head. Aroma of smoke, and hints of charred wood. The flavor is huge on the smoke and too much hops to battle the smoke. I think the beer should have a bit more body as well.
