   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 15/20
superspak (2543) - Michigan, USA - AUG 10, 2014
500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear ruby/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces t oa thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, apples, caramel, toast, brown sugar, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester notes; with good strength. A bit too strong on the fruity notes in the aroma. Taste of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Very clean on lager flavor. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good doppelbock style. Good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hop, and yeast fruitiness; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

If you like big, raisiny doppelbocks this will be right up your alley. It pours a clear dark amber and goes to being headless after about a minute. Nose is sort of a boozy bit of raisin and malt syrup. This is thick and sweet on the tongue w/ very gentle carbonation. Definitely, this is a slow sipper even though it is in the same range of strength as an IPA. I am not sure if it is by design or if I got an old bottle but this has a pleasant oxidized malt character, the nuttiness of which helps bring out some toffee flavors. The finish is long and sweet w/ a slight coffee-like note emerging at the very end. Ultimately, this is a bit sweeter than I’d prefer even for the style but it does have a nice, complex malt profile and it’s hard to ask for that much more, a pure malt-bomb for those who just cannot get enough.

This Doppelbock is fine example of the type. The aroma is sweet with some very slight candy and vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is very nice with smooth buttery texture. The flavor is sweet without being overpowering. Some hop acidity helps keep the malt in check.

Miltenberger. Swing top bottle. Fizzy brown/red pour. Smells like malt liquor, tangy fruits, noble hop, booze. Way tooo tangy nose. Flavor is beter. slightly metallic, lots of foruts, caramel, still boozy, thim. Just not a great example of the style.

It’s mahogany with a small dense head. The aroma has notes of caramel, nuts, fruit, light yeast and burnt sugar. The sweet flavor has notes of roasted malt, caramel, fruits, nuts and burnt sugar and a weak touch of alcohol in the very end. The balance is wonderful.

Good and roasty, but just a tad on the thin side. Spontaneously delicious.
